Voice of Lady Trojans wins broadcasting award
By JG/T-C Staff sports@jg-tc.com
CHARLESTON -- Jeff Joniak, Brian Barnhart and John Twork can all be put into the same category. All three won Silver Dome Awards from the Illinois Broadcasters Association on Tuesday night for Radio Sports Play-By-Play.
Joniak, from WBBM-AM in Chicago, won the large market award for coverage of the Chicago Bears. WDWS-AM and Illinois Fighting Illini announcer Brian Barnhart garnered the medium market award, and Twork, the voice of the Charleston Lady Trojans on WEIU-FM, got the honor for small market radio.
It is the second time that a member of the WEIU staff has received this award. Mike Bradd, the voice of the Eastern Illinois Panthers, won the award in 2004. The Silver Dome is a statewide competition that honors the best in broadcasting in the state of Illinois.
Twork has been the voice of Charleston girls’ basketball for two years. He teamed with Rob Calhoun as his color commentator for the broadcast of Lady Trojans historic run in the Charleston Holiday Tournament. The game submitted was the semifinal game against Effingham that Charleston won 48-38 to advance to the championship.
Twork was humbled by winning this award.
“It’s amazing to be recognized for doing a good job at something I love to do,” he said. “To be placed in the same category as talented announcers such as Brian Barnhart and Jeff Joniak is a true honor. I will use this award as motivation to continue to improve my broadcasting skills, and hopefully this will help lead to a long and rewarding career as a play-by-play announcer.”
Calhoun said: “It was an incredible game to be able to do. I am flattered that I could be part of an award winning broadcast. Twork did an excellent job with the play-by-play. The game was very exciting and he was able to convey that with his call of the game.”
This is the fourth time that Twork has been honored for his coverage of Charleston girls’ basketball. Twork has won first place in 2007 and 2008 in the Students in Illinois News Broadcasters Association awards and third place in the Illinois Broadcasters Association-University awards.
WEIU station manager Jeff Owens said of Twork: “We are very proud of his accomplishments. We expect great things from him in the future. He is a member of our student management team and will join the EIU football broadcasts this fall as a sideline reporter with Mike Bradd and Jack Ashmore.”
Calhoun went on to say: “One of these days I am going to be able to say ‘I worked with Twork when he first started out. He is a talented announcer, who can only get better in the years to come. Everyone is very proud of what he has been able to do in such a short time in his career.’ ”
