Two Charleston students receive Merit Scholarships

CHARLESTON — Two Charleston students were among the more than 2,800 recipients of National Merit Scholarships sponsored by the colleges or universities the students plan to attend.

The recipients, who were chosen based on their scores on a qualifying test they took as high school juniors, are Peter Borah, who completed high school by being home-schooled, and Tyler Replogle, a 2008 graduate of Charleston High School.

They are the only two students from the Charleston-Mattoon area who received the National Merit Scholarships.

According to an announcement from the National Merit Scholarship Corp., the university and college scholarships provide up to $2,000 annually for up to four years. Both Borah and Replogle have also received additional scholarships to cover their entire tuition and expenses.

Borah plans to attend the University of Chicago and said he’ll study either philosophy or psychology with plans to eventually become a college professor. The National Merit Scholarship, which he said will cover various fees, along with a full-tuition scholarship are what are allowing him to attend the university.

“I’m pretty excited,” Borah said. “The University of Chicago is a great school and I’m excited to go there.”

Replogle will attend Harding University in Searcy, Ark., and said he was interested in the school because it’s affiliated with the Church of Christ, which he attends. He said he plans to study religion and possibly become a minister.

“I want to do something with religion,” Replogle said. “The university gives pretty good scholarships, so it was attractive.”

Replogle is the son of Steve and Jane Replogle. Borah is the son of Jena and Bernard Borah.

To qualify for the National Merit Scholarships, high school juniors take the Preliminary SAT, similar to the SAT that some universities use for admission consideration. Both Borah and Replogle said they achieved near-perfect scores on the test.

Charleston High School students also received National Merit Scholarships each of the last two years: Ben Leddy in 2007 and Nathan Macy in 2006.

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corp., another round of college-sponsored scholarship winners will be announced in July, bringing the total number of recipients to about 4,600.
