COLUMN: We're adding 'Baby Blues,' 'Tundra' to comics page

Our lineup of comics changes beginning on June 2.

We’re adding “Baby Blues” and “Tundra” to our daily comics page Monday through Saturday, replacing “Rose Is Rose” and “Peanuts.”

Secondly, we’re dropping “Doonesbury” and “Mallard Fillmore” from the editorial page.

One other change that you may notice is scheduled to begin on June 14 with the Saturday newspaper becoming a single Weekend edition. That means that all the pages will be identical throughout the seven-county region served by the daily print edition.

When we look at feedback from readers in our comics surveys, both “Doonesbury” and “Mallard Fillmore” rate toward the bottom. So when we looked to make some cuts, they rose to the top of the list.

With one being conservative and one liberal, they very much were a package in which we would either keep both or drop both. We have plenty of other material available for the editorial page that is local, regional and national, and represents a variety of viewpoints.

Regarding “Peanuts,” the strip’s creator, Charles Schulz, retired in December 1999 and died in February 2000. The last original “Peanuts” strip ran the day after Schulz’s death.

Those who continue to crave a taste of Schulz’s work, however, can still get it each week in the Sunday Comics.

“Baby Blues” not only scored high in our comics surveys, but also is one of the most popular strips in the country. It is a great addition to our daily lineup, and readers will recognize it from the Sunday Comics section too.

The move to “Tundra” from “Rose Is Rose” gives another fresh look to the comics page with a strip that has generated positive comments.

For a preview of both “Baby Blues” and “Tundra,” see page C1 of today’s paper.

We take seriously any change to the lineup of comics. Every strip has its fans, and we do our best to serve a variety of interests.

The change to the Saturday edition is unrelated to the lineup of comics. For many years, virtually all the content in the Journal Gazette and Times-Courier has been the same. Some of the articles are placed differently depending on the edition.

This move means that on Saturday each article will be played the same in one edition of the newspaper as we strive to operate as efficiently as possible.

We very much appreciate your reading the Journal Gazette/Times-Courier and jg-tc.com. We know the relationship with readers is what makes us the leading source of news, information and advertising in our region.

" Woooo.... Thank goodness none of my fav comics were listed for termination, except I do like looking at Peanuts, somewhat.

The only thing I will vent at is I hope the Saturday Edition, of the printed version of the JG-TC, never ends up looking like your Sunday Edition.

I think, in my opinion, the Sunday Edition of the JG-TC is crap! With the exception of the first couple of pages of local news, who likes looking at an overall Decatur paper? Buying a Sunday JG-TC paper is a waste of money, & after purchasing a couple, long ago, I'll never buy another one again. If you folks want to have a Sunday paper, make it look like all the others, here, through-out the week - otherwise, 86 it. "

You write as though it's 1985. One can read almost any comic strip online now. The Washington Post, for instance, has a huge array:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artsandliving/comics/index.html

Sad to say, the possibilities of choice that the Internet offers will continue to make print journalism less and less relevant to many readers. "

" Yeah, what Rotty said. The Sunday rag is a waste of time - maybe two pages of local news and that's it. The carrier doesn't even bother to 'put the paper together'. If our copy wasn't delivered in that 'rain bag' thing, it would be a pile of loose sections plus a bunch of throw-a-way ads blowing all over the neighborhood. The only reason we get it is because they include it at no charge to the other six days. // And speaking of waste, why doesn't the JG/T-C offer a recycling program of their very own - where they would send a truck around weekly or monthly to collect all the tons of newsprint that now goes into the dump? "

" Who needs the comics? You can get all the humor you need from these threads. I laugh harder over the comments posted on this site than I ever would from a full page of comic strips.

I would suggest dropping the comics page altogether and moving the reprinted posts from this site to that page. You would even have more space to reprint more of the stuff posted on here daily.

Another idea might be to move Harry's editorials to the comic page. Or perhaps a whole new page, called more boring stories about my family, by Harry Reynolds.

I have to concur with some of the comments above, in that what most of us would really like is more Coles county news and less Decatur coverage.

For the most part, the Sunday edition is mostly Decatur coverage, with just enough local coverage to justify the front page banner.

Lastly, despite all the reasons given for these changes by Walworth, I suspect this was a move to save money for Lee Enterprises, more than anything. "

" I see my post, about what their next Online Poll should be, got scrapped.
LOL
Here's another improvement.
How about actually updating your website every half an hour, like you advertise in your printed version of the newspaper?
OK, JG-TC, zap away.
LOL "

Independent wrote on May 30, 2008 3:59 PM:

" Question for Rotty
Are you looking at the Web site every half hour for updates on local news or are you looking to see if your postings are listed? If it is the former, I can understand why you would be frustrated. If it is the latter, you might want to find more rewarding ways to spend your time. "

Rotty wrote on May 30, 2008 8:07 PM:

" Independent, I usually check these boards once in the morning, then usually after work, or after I arrive home, if I'm able to.
While I'm out enjoying my rewarding ways, as you like to call it, I hear alot of what goes on around here, & when I do check online to see if I can read up more about it, it doesn't get listed too awful fast.
I just so happen to notice, when reading through the printed version of the paper, the other day at work, I came across one of the JG-TC's little ads proclaiming to check out their online website, & how it is updated every 30 minutes.
I thought this was funny, because most of us, who've been around here for awhile now, pretty well know when this place gets updated, & it doesn't get done every 30 minutes, like the ad proclaims.
I just thought I would make a remark about it.
Now, as for your latter, if I'm at home, in the evening, I will admit I do check out the website, here, a little more frequently, along with other forums, but that's because I enjoy comment boards, & forum venues - that's just what I enjoy doing, when I get the chance to surf the web.
I'm sorry if I don't meet your expectations on how an ordinary citizen, with a differing opinion, should act.
If you don't care for, or like my posts, may I suggest you skip over them, & continue on.
Thanks for your concern. "

Early Bird wrote on May 31, 2008 7:00 AM:

" Amen, Rotty.

I would put our friend Independent right along side all of the spelling and grammar critics on here.

If you really think about it, it takes a lot of gall to suggest how someone should spend their free time.

I have tried making the same point, that is, skip over messages from anyone you don't care to read (such as 85grad), but it doesn't do any good.

I suspect these folks say things like that because they lack the ability for making a relevant point.

Oh well, I guess it takes all kinds of people to make the world go around, and that would include dullards and slow witted types.

Enjoy the weekend, my friend, it's looks like a beauty! "

Independent wrote on May 31, 2008 4:21 PM:

" Hello Rotty and Early Bird
I am not sure I have ever galled someone before.
Anyway, I would not seriously suggest to someone how to spend their free time. Your posting created a funny image to me of someone looking at the JG-TC Web site every 30 minutes, so I latched on to that. You guys toss out sarcastic jibs and jabs in many directions in your postings, so I decided to make one of my own.
As for relevant points, throw a topic my way Early Bird and I will discuss it. I will try not to be a dullard or slow witted.
Not sure if this fits the relevant point category, but I do agree with Rotty that if the Web site is not updated every 30 minutes it should not be advertised that this is so.
Hope you had a good weekend. "

Rotty wrote on May 31, 2008 5:10 PM:

" Thanks, Early Bird, & I agree with your post, as well.
You take care & enjoy the great weekend too, my friend.
See ya around.
:-) "

Rotty wrote on Jun 1, 2008 3:29 PM:

" Thanks for your post, & for agreeing, Independent.
You should have broadened your target, or your attempt at humor, but I can understand your point, considering my May 29, 2008 6:18 PM post.
It's just when you stated "If it is the latter, you might want to find more rewarding ways to spend your time.", is when your attempt at humor was lost.
You should have broadened the punch-line as well.
But, be it far from me to tell someone how to type, like Early Bird said, it takes all kinds of people to make the world go around, guess that's what puts the fun into comment areas & forum venues.
Like Harry Potter once said, I'm just another misunderstood soul.
LOL!
Hope you had a good weekend, as well, Independent.
Thanks again for your post. "

" I hate to digress by getting back on topic but...

Obviously, M.F. and Doonsbury are going to be the some of the most hated cartoons because they are political. People hate the one that doesn't agree with their viewpoints. I think they should stay. At least they are on the editorial page where they belong.
I am glad to see Rose and Peanuts go. Peanuts should have left along time ago. If I want repeats, I'll watch TV. Besides, constantly seeing Charlie Brown lose kites, baseball games, and miss kicking the football again and again is not funny, it's depressing. Rose, on the other hand, was so sickingly sweet, it made me ill.

I really miss "The Far Side". That "Close to Home" is a poor imitation. "

pudgesmom wrote on Jun 3, 2008 2:30 PM:

" I had no idea this was coming b/c I don't buy the paper every day anymore (we're trying to cut back even on the little stuff!). I was surprised to see the Peanuts gone b/c it's a comic's page mainstay IMO. I figured it'd gotten dropped b/c of Mr. Shultz' passing. HOWEVER: I LOVE "ROSE IS ROSE"!! The few times so far that I've read "Tundra", well, let's say I'd rather park my car on "Tundra" than read it! I've never even heard of it. "Rose" made me laugh almost everyday and my husband and I will both miss little Peekaboo (the kitten in the strip) and her antics. I hope to see it return b/c so far, yeah, "Tundra" kind of stinks (and I'm being kind). Oh, and while "Close to Home" is a cheap knock-off, I remember reading a couple of years ago that Gary Larson stopped writing "The Far Side" (which I too loved). And one final comment, I could honestly do without "Herman" too. The artwork is messy and often looks like the writer had a few before s/he took to writing. And maybe it's just me, but it on the occasion that I actually DO understand the joke and the artwork, it's rarely funny at all. Anyone else have trouble deciphering "Herman"?? "

Cognitus wrote on Jun 3, 2008 7:40 PM:

" Yes, the Sunday paper is trash. Although it asserts to be a Decatur paper, its format is generic. If it continues, I
may subscribe only to the 6 days of the week. I get the Post-Dispatch anyway on Sunday which is a REAL newspaper.
And I am vexed to lose Peanuts. When it ran the first time, I was too busy professionally to read comics; now I have time to relax and enjoy it.
Mallard Fillmore I'm ashamed of; I had a friend who 50 years ago had a radio program in another state with a section he called Millard the Mallard; this guy simply stole the name. "
