COLUMN: We're adding 'Baby Blues,' 'Tundra' to comics page
By CARL WALWORTH, Publisher cwalworth@jg-tc.com
Our lineup of comics changes beginning on June 2.
We’re adding “Baby Blues” and “Tundra” to our daily comics page Monday through Saturday, replacing “Rose Is Rose” and “Peanuts.”
Secondly, we’re dropping “Doonesbury” and “Mallard Fillmore” from the editorial page.
One other change that you may notice is scheduled to begin on June 14 with the Saturday newspaper becoming a single Weekend edition. That means that all the pages will be identical throughout the seven-county region served by the daily print edition.
When we look at feedback from readers in our comics surveys, both “Doonesbury” and “Mallard Fillmore” rate toward the bottom. So when we looked to make some cuts, they rose to the top of the list.
With one being conservative and one liberal, they very much were a package in which we would either keep both or drop both. We have plenty of other material available for the editorial page that is local, regional and national, and represents a variety of viewpoints.
Regarding “Peanuts,” the strip’s creator, Charles Schulz, retired in December 1999 and died in February 2000. The last original “Peanuts” strip ran the day after Schulz’s death.
Those who continue to crave a taste of Schulz’s work, however, can still get it each week in the Sunday Comics.
“Baby Blues” not only scored high in our comics surveys, but also is one of the most popular strips in the country. It is a great addition to our daily lineup, and readers will recognize it from the Sunday Comics section too.
The move to “Tundra” from “Rose Is Rose” gives another fresh look to the comics page with a strip that has generated positive comments.
For a preview of both “Baby Blues” and “Tundra,” see page C1 of today’s paper.
We take seriously any change to the lineup of comics. Every strip has its fans, and we do our best to serve a variety of interests.
The change to the Saturday edition is unrelated to the lineup of comics. For many years, virtually all the content in the Journal Gazette and Times-Courier has been the same. Some of the articles are placed differently depending on the edition.
This move means that on Saturday each article will be played the same in one edition of the newspaper as we strive to operate as efficiently as possible.
We very much appreciate your reading the Journal Gazette/Times-Courier and jg-tc.com. We know the relationship with readers is what makes us the leading source of news, information and advertising in our region.

The only thing I will vent at is I hope the Saturday Edition, of the printed version of the JG-TC, never ends up looking like your Sunday Edition.
I think, in my opinion, the Sunday Edition of the JG-TC is crap! With the exception of the first couple of pages of local news, who likes looking at an overall Decatur paper? Buying a Sunday JG-TC paper is a waste of money, & after purchasing a couple, long ago, I'll never buy another one again. If you folks want to have a Sunday paper, make it look like all the others, here, through-out the week - otherwise, 86 it. "
