Ill. House Republicans call for a gas tax holiday

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — House Republicans are calling for a suspension of the Illinois sales tax on gasoline this summer.

Lawmakers claim the average family would save up to $60 over a four-month tax holiday. Truckers might save $1,000.

State revenues would drop by roughly $200 million at a time when the budget is already out of balance. But supporters say the tax break would help stimulate the economy.

Republican lawmakers are calling on Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan to allow a vote on their idea.

Illinois approved a similar tax holiday in 2000 when gas prices topped $2 a gallon. It was never clear how much that translated into savings for consumers.

The bill is HB6318

" The idea of a tax holiday on gasoline, while good on paper, will do little to ease the financial burden of the motorists of Illinois. "

" wow, great idea! $60 over a four month period? that's $15 a month or $0.50 a day. i'm sure that will come in REAL handy. just think, if you save up that $0.50 a ay for a whole week, you MAY have enough for a gallon of milk. "

" This is merely a political ploy on the part of the Illinois house Republicans. Sounds good, but really does nothing. Is anyone really naive enough to think this savings would actually reach the consumer? If so, I have some swampland in Arizona that I would.....

Until the US dollar stabilizes on the world market the price of gas will continue to rise. There is a definite correlation in the fall of the dollar and the increase in wholesale crude prices.

This is not rocket science.

Of course there are other things that need addressed for the future, but this is the main reason for the ridiculous price increases of late.

This is in spite of all the hot air from both political parties, and the prognosticators on this site, and all over the Internet. "

" The Saudi royal family, the Bush family, the Harrimans, Rockefellers, American banks, American Oil, and Americas political elite, went into business with Nazi terrorists who murdered tens of millions of innocent, men, women, and children, including tens of thousands of Americans. They partnered with a terrorist regime that was at war with America for three interrelated reasons: money, oil, and power.

Decades later, after Bush was elected vice-president and then President, he, the Saudi royal family, and the CIA, would provide tens of millions of dollars in support of yet another terrorist organization that would declare war with the United States, this one ostensibly headed by Saudi multi-millionaire, Osama bin Laden. As we shall see, doing business with gangsters, thugs, and terrorists who preach death to America, and who kill Americans, is a Bush family tradition. "

" The Illinois gas tax is 39.9 cents per gallon. It is higher in the Chicago metro area.

If I fill one 20 gallon tank a week, the savings $7.98. Of course, that will have a much bigger impact on truckers.

Some uninformed poster thinks that dropping the gas tax somehow increases oil company profits. That is simply to ridiculous to comment on.

It is a double edge sword. It does provided some limited relief to those who drive vehicles. It also will put the state budget in further crisis. "

tammer65 wrote on May 23, 2008 11:55 AM:

" When Hillary Clinton proposed a summer hiatus for the federal gas tax, nearly every economic expert who weighed in on the issue said that it was a bad idea.

First of all, there is no guarantee that the money winds up in the pockets of consumers. What will keep individual gas station operators from raising what they charge per gallon and pocketing the profit?

Secondly, the savings -- even if the figure of almost $8.00 savings for every 20 gallon fillup holds true -- provide only short-term relief.

Thirdly, with the IL budget in a state of crisis, how can we justify cutting state revenue by another $200 million? Where do we make up those extra funds? What services will have to be cut, when many state budgets are all ready cut to the bone? Will it lead to more layoffs? It's easy to say, "Who cares if someone working for a bloated state agency loses his or her job?" until you realize that person will no longer be frequenting grocery stores, restaurants, retail stores, etc. Layoffs lead to things like home foreclosure and business failures.

I'm in the same situation as most lower- and lower-middle class taxpayers. I struggle every month to keep a modest roof over my head, pay my utilities, buy groceries, and keep gas in my tank. I don't take vacations or buy new clothes. I can't afford to eat out. I have no money in savings and live from paycheck to paycheck. I don't belittle what an extra $5 or $8 or $20 here and there can mean to my household budget. But I don't believe suspending the gas tax will solve my family's budget crisis, and I think it will make the big picture look much more bleak for the state of Illinois. I don't support the Republicans who came up with this short-sighted proposal any more than I supported Hillary Clinton when she proposed the same thing at the federal level. "

" If you have not noticed session is out and nothing was done, so here we are. It is time to quit our jobs ( if we dont lose them to shut downs of businesses) and draw unemployment. It would be better off financially than to pay for gas to drive to work. "
