Salvation Army captains heading upstate in June

MATTOON — Local Salvation Army volunteers and supporters received bad news Thurday night during the agency’s annual dinner.

Salvation Army Captains Bill and Heather Holman announced they will be leaving next month for a new posting in Waukegan. They first came to Coles County four years ago.

“That’s the Salvation Army. But it’s not a goodbye. It’s a see ya later,” said Heather during the dinner that recognizes the many contributors to the success of Salvation Army.

“We have our marching orders. We will be going to Waukegan next month. We’ve had four wonderful years in Mattoon,” said Captain Bill Holman, noting changes in assignments are expected and unpredictable sometimes in Salvation Army.

The Holmans have worked hard to increase support for Salvation charities like the annual Bell Ringing Campaign. They and hard-working volunteers were successful with increasing the annual donations from past efforts.

Last fall, the effort kicked off with distribution of coffe and free doughnuts, based on the recipe from World War I distributions of doughnuts to soldiers coming out of the trenches.

They also coordinated efforts on a summer day camp for children, the pantry donations and other efforts to support those in need. Last year, the local Salvation Army unit assisted 9,026 people. Groceries, rent assistance, clothing and furniture, medicine, utility help and transportation were provided to 2,900.

Much of this assistance is made possible by the efforts of volunteers and Salvation Board members. Individuals and groups help Salvation Army with its mission to provide assistance and spiritual guidance throughout the year. The top volunteer bell ringers were members of the Mattoon Street Department, while the volunteer club included members of the local Postal Workers union.
