LETTER: Stop giving illegal immigrants benefits

The illegal immigration problem hasn’t been solved. The borders remain open because the administration doesn’t want to close them. Open borders go hand in hand with plans for a North American Union. Closing them is inconsistent with “integrating” Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Americans were rightly angered early in 2006 when hundreds of thousands of demonstrators, many obviously here illegally, clogged streets of major cities, waved Mexican flags, demanded favors from government, and trashed the Stars and Stripes. Two separate examples of this type of arrogance roused many into demanding action to stop the flood of illegal immigrants. But the illegal immigrant problem hasn’t been fixed and the border is not controlled. Some National Guard troops were sent into the area near, but not at, the border. Drug traffic and crime caused by illegal immigrants continue. So the border remains nearly as porous as ever.

There is one step that would greatly ease the illegal immigration problem, if not end it completely. All that’s needed is to put a stop to providing a variety of taxpayer-supplied benefits to those who have broken the law to come here. No more education, medical care, food, housing, etc. No more anchor babies who are then cited as legal justification for family members to be here. Let those who aspire to live and work in the United States aspire to complete the process of legal immigration.

" LOL, I called the IRS Stimulus Rebate phone number yesterday (1-866-234-2942). Here's a part of the recorded message I heard: "To continue in English, press One." Hmmm, I wonder why a non-English-speaking caller (presumably an illegal alien from Mexico since the message was in Spanish) would have questions about Stimulus Rebates. I also wonder if the IRS is handing out instructions for how to direct-deposit rebate checks to Mexican bank accounts. And a warm welcome to Amexica! "

" tommie, it doesn't quite work that way. an immigrant is issued a ITIN (individual taxpayer identification number) they use that number just as you would use your SSN. if they have paid taxes they are just as eligible for a tax refund as you are. when a SSN or a ITIN number is used and the return transmitted to the IRS, the data base won't let it be used again for the filing year, unless you made corrections and file an amended return. it also can't be used again by another individual. immigrants can also apply for and receive a SSN.

the IRS will not transmit refunds outside of the US.

" Maybe a better question is why we are giving out tax rebate checks to people who didn't even pay taxes? Just a thought. "

" Nothing, and I repeat nothing will change with the illegal immigrant situation until our government starts putting the owners and managers of businesses in jail for hiring any illegal immigrant in the first place. If the government were to do that, you would see a drastic decrease in this problem. But don't hold your breath waiting for this to happen. In the mean time politicians from both sides of the aisle just talk talk talk. "

" did it ever occur to you people that some of the people who come here LEGALLY simply understand their first language better than english? English is one of the hardest languages to learn and it is also a proven scientific fact that adults have a harder time learning a new language than children do. "
