Slain Douglas County deputy to receive Medal of Honor



TUSCOLA — Slain Douglas County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Tommy “T.K.” Martin has been selected to receive the State of Illinois Governor’s Award/Medal of Honor

This award is the highest award presented at the state level and is awarded to officers who performed heroically in the line of duty.

Sheriff Charlie McGrew completed an application and forwarded to the State of Illinois for review, according to a press release from the sheriff’s department. A panel comprised of both law enforcement and civilian personnel reviewed the application and selected Chief Deputy Martin’s heroic actions during the crime spree in Douglas County this past summer warranted recognition.

In all, 28 officers are being honored for bravery in the line of duty. Governor Rod Blagojevich will present Chief Deputy Martin’s family with the medal at the Executive Mansion in Springfield, Illinois on Friday May 23rd, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. The presentation will take place one day before Chief Deputy Martin’s memorial is dedicated in front of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The memorial will dedication is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday May 24, 2008.

Martin, 59, died July 17 as a result of gunshot wounds he received while responding to an armed robbery on June 21.

Martin was killed while responding to a call to search for two men who had robbed a grocery store in Camargo and stolen vehicles.

Yusef Kareem Brown and William B. Thompson, both of Chicago, were arrested in the crime spree.

Brown, 23, and Thompson, 26, each are charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Martin.
