Simpson throws another shutout in Lady Trojans’ win

CHARLESTON -- Amy Simpson threw a five-inning shutout for the second straight day as Charleston beat Champaign Central 10-0 in Wednesday’s non-conference softball.

The sophomore pitched a two-hitter in the mercy-rule five-inning game after throwing a three-hitter in Tuesday’s 12-0 win completing an Apollo Conference doubleheader sweep over Salem.

“I think she’s just becoming a lot better pitcher instead of just throwing the ball,” Charleston coach Karen Karch said. “She struck out a couple of batters on changeups when she just froze them. She’s also getting a lot tougher mentally too. After a walk she’ll come back and get a strikeout. I think it helps a lot to have Alex (Kuhn) behind the plate too. Being a senior I think Alex helps her a lot.”

Simpson also had a double and a single, Devan Finley had a triple and single with four RBIs and Courtney Figgins was a third Lady Trojan going 2-for-2 in this game.

Charleston is 7-5 going into a 4:30 p.m. Friday home game against Marshall to be followed by an 11 a.m. Saturday Apollo doubleheader at home against Mount Zion.

“The girls are really playing pretty well right now,” Karch said.

Baseball Trojans now 11-3

CHARLESTON – Taylor Nead had a no-hitter going in the fourth inning but his Charleston baseball team has a key Apollo Conference doubleheader scheduled for Saturday.

So Nead was relived when he reached his pitch count limit and two teammates helped finish the combined one-hitter and 10-2 non-conference baseball win over Rantoul on Friday.

“There was no question he was coming out,” Charleston coach Derrick Landrus said. That’s as good as he looked all year. He had all three pitches working and was very efficient.”

Eric Gentry went 3-for-4, Lee Walden hit his first home run of the season in a 2-for-2 day and Trey Ryan and Clayton Murphy added two hits each as Charleston raised its record to 11-3.

The Trojans have a 4:30 p.m. Friday non-conference home game against Danville before going to Mount Zion for an 11 a.m. Saturday Apollo Conference doubleheader.
