LETTER: Bloggers hide behind anonymous speech

My last letter to the editor dealt with bloggers who felt they needed to write anonymously in order to further a more informed community dialogue. Anonymous blog comments responding to that letter, however, illustrate a danger that often lurks behind anonymous speech.

Two anonymous bloggers responded with comments indicating that they did not intend to understand my letter. One accomplished this goal with a one word dismissal, “What?” Another agreed, added, “that sounded like a bunch of verbal garbage,” then asked, “Is that coming straight out of the Coles County Courthouse?” Anyone concerned about raising the common level of respect for fellow citizens, the law, the legal process, and our local system of justice needs to know the identities of those bloggers.

One anonymous blogger, with apparent retribution in mind, wrote “Have the devil fire up his snow-blower.” Another responding blogger felt entitled to a personal and defamatory familiarity: “You just about covered everything, Ruthie. About the only thing you left out was global warming, that and toe tapping in public restrooms.” Another added to this, “I don’t think we covered Obama’s church or the governor of New York.” Anyone seeking to address the threats and false assumptions spawned by such commentary would benefit from the sunlight of open communication with these bloggers. All too often disrespect and deception cower under cover of anonymity.

Experience has shown that persistent and purposefully violative speech, especially when anonymous, does not disappear if everyone just ignores it. Such speech serves no socially healthy purpose as a safety valve for letting off steam. Undebated by vigilant and skillful responders willing to identify themselves openly, such speech creates a community momentum antagonistic to open civil dialogue free from vigilante threats.

Committed citizens must hone their sharp shooting skills to take aim at the threats that pulse beneath anonymous and malicious speech. Clear, published laws and sunshine policies that encourage open, participatory democracy, not anonymous vigilante justice, have always served as the primary resources of safety and security for all citizens in a democracy.

" Ms. Leigh, I've been hanging out in these forums for a long time, so I'm familiar with a lot of what's posted here. I fail to see the danger that you're referring to (the "danger that often lurks behind anonymous speech"). Sure, there is plenty of rude and abusive language going back and forth--but engaging in it is not required. Why not simply ignore comments you don't like rather than take them personally or feel threatened by them?

If someone actually threatened another person, I believe there are ways for law enforcement to track the offending individual down. Otherwise, you are dealing with free speech issues. I certainly do not feel I need to know the identities of anonymous bloggers, even the ones who have occasionally said things I didn't like.

Besides, the line between what I consider defamatory and what I simply do not like is apt to be fuzzy. People have the right to decide not to understand your letter, and they have the right to express their opinions about it (legitimate or not). Perhaps you are taking it all too seriously. In short, respond to comments that interest you and disregard the rest. "

" Threats of violence and malicious speech are in clear violation the policies of this service -- be they from anonymous posters or persons who use their name. Also, let us remember Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, John Jay and Alexander Hamilton all wrote, at times, anonymously. Frustrating as it might be, especially when the rhetoric outweighs any substantive comments, there is a time honored tradition of anonymous speech in American history. "

" Good grief, Ruth. People were merely having a little fun at your expense, because you attempted to cover everything under the sun with one letter. I fail to see how any of this is dangerous, and if you really thought it was, you should have did a better job of explaining that danger. It sounded more like sour grapes over the negative response your letter recieved. And as far as using anonymity, how do you really know that people who use real sounding names are really that person. Case in point: one original blogger who uses real sounding names changes his name every few months or so. Ruth, I would remind you of that old saying about taking heat and the kitchen...and for ed miller, would you agree that the name calling comes from both sides, or are you saving your criticism for those that disagree with your positions? "

I so agree with your point. What it causes to happen is people that don't hide behind the curtain just quit writing. They KNOW they will be attacked by the chosen few who make this their little attack club. I wrote the owners of the paper...u might try that. This is written to RUTH, so the attack dogs can save their key strokes...I won't be responding to any others. "

The economy is in the toilet, people cannot pay their bills, cannot afford to buy the gas needed to get to their jobs to pay the bills, drug use and alcoholism are at all time highs - etc. etc. etc. I fail to see how worrying about anonymous bloggers and their motives is important. Regardless of the reason, it's a matter of choice to post under any name we choose. Get over it.:-).......... I agree with Rotty and Bird. Will you have some cheese to go with that whine, you big babies?
I have found that behind many lofty-sounding objections to anonymous posting lies a simple truth — a lot of people don't like hearing honest, unpopular, pull-no-punches opinions expressed, and are groping for a way to silence them. "

" Ms. Leigh, I appreciate some of what you're saying. Sounds like you're probably more comfortable only with ‘attributable’ commentary. In some ways, the drivel on here is akin to public graffiti, and serves a similar purpose. However, you have to remember anonymity can serve a purpose in fostering positive changes in public opinion or perception, especially on political issues. Benjamin Franklin penned many such commentaries in his day under several pseudonyms. In too many instances though, the difference between Franklin’s efforts in this regard and today’s posters on here would best be described as a ‘contrast’ – not a ‘comparison’ as I’m sure some would (anonymously) prefer to claim. The main contrast being one of ‘class’. "

Upon discovery of this by a sharp reporter, the campaign quickly removed the recipes in question and immediately tried to place the blame on a low level employee, Yeah, right John, nice try.

It seems that Cindy has a bit of a problem stealing things. First she has an affair with a married man, then steals him from his first wife. Then she steals prescription drugs from a medical charity she supposedly runs. And now we find she steals recipes from the Food Network. Boy, she sure would make a swell first lady.
