Caswell Sisters to perform Sunday at Tarble

CHARLESTON — A concert of jazz violin and vocals by the Caswell Sisters will close the 2007-2008 Tarble Arts Center Chamber Music Series.

The Caswell Sisters will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Tarble, Eastern Illinois University.

The performances of the Caswell sisters are the culmination of years of working together. Their sound combines tight arrangements with a repertoire ranging from the “Great American Songbook” to bebop to contemporary jazz propelled by improvisation.

Violinist Sara has performed with Skitch Henderson, Charlie Byrd, John Clayton and many of today’s top jazz violinists. She has also soloed in Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops Orchestra and Jazz Allstars.

Her most recent CD, “But Beautiful” (Arbors Records) was listed by Bob Parlocha, nationally-syndicated jazz radio host, in his “Top 40 New Releases” for nine consecutive weeks, including a week at No. 1. She tours as a soloist with violinist Mark O’Connor’s American String Celebration, performs with the New York Pops Orchestra, and teaches jazz violin.

She has won more than 100 awards and first-place prizes in the jazz and classical competition worlds, including several DownBeat awards

Vocalist Rachel’s unique style combines extraordinary scattting and sensitive interpretation. She has preformed with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and the Billy Taylor Trio.

She was selected to perform a duo concert at the 2006 International Association for Jazz Education Annual Conference in New York City. In addition to winning the Hilton Head Jazz Society Scholarship and placing in the top ten of 150 contestants in the 2005 jazzconnect.com annual vocal competition, Rachel has won many awards as a classical cellist and jazz musician.

She can be heard on her debut CD “Some Other Time.”

Both artists participated in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s Summer Residency Program in Aspen; graduated from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with High Distinction; and have master’s degrees in jazz performance — Rachel from the New England Conservatory (Boston) and Sara from the Manhattan School of Music.

The Caswell Sisters will be backed by a trio of piano (EIU’s Paul Johnston), bass and drums. Music faculty member Susan Teicher serves as the Chamber Music Series’ artistic director, and the series is co-sponsored with the EIU Music Department.

Admission is $15, $12 for Tarble members and seniors, $10 for students; free for EIU music students. For information phone 581-2787 or e-mail tarble@eiu.edu.

Seating is limited but not reserved. The Tarble Arts Center is located at Ninth Street and Cleveland Avenue in Charleston.
