LETTER: Thanks to city council for historic district

The Historic Preservation Commission would like to commend the Charleston City Council for approving the commission’s recommendation to designate portions of 6th and 7th streets as the city’s first historic district. This action is the council’s recognition that neighborhoods like 6th and 7th Street are valued by the community and affirms what many homeowners already believe: that this area of the city is worthy of passing on to future generations.

The council’s vote is a step toward enhancing the quality of life, not only for residents of this neighborhood, but for the community as a whole.

The homes, churches, and commercial buildings contained within the district are a finite resource that is irreplaceable.

We preserve part of our history when we preserve our historical buildings and other structures, whether residential or commercial.

The Charleston Historic Preservation Commission looks forward to working on behalf of property owners in this and other historically and architecturally rich areas of the community.

The Charleston Historic Preservation Commission

HANK BEURSKENS, BUD FISCHER, PAT McCALLISTER, KIT MORICE, ELISA ROBERTS, MIKE TITUS and JACKIE WILEN
