Play Too!: New teen club opens at Mattoon Ramada Inn

Abel Delgado believes if you give teens a safe place to hang out, it will keep them out of trouble.

So, in recent weeks he’s opened a teen club he’s calling Play Too!

The new club is housed at the Ramada Inn in Mattoon, and has its own entrance at the east side of the building, which acts as a safety measure for its young occupants.

Play Too! is specifically geared for young people age 14-20.

It is an alcohol-free, smoke-free establishment complete with things young people live for — music, videogames and food.

A stage is set up for a live band; a smaller DJ set is nearby. The large dance area is sprinkled with round tables.

Another section offers coin-operated video games, foosball, air hockey and golf; two 52-inch screen TVs for Play Station II, Rock Band and Guitar Hero III sets.

Delgado is renting the area most recently housed by the Taste of Italy restaurant and he plans to have regular monthly drawings for prizes like Xbox 360 game stations, and weekly drawings for iPod Shuffles, both hot items for young people today.

The club offers some drinks, food and snacks for purchase. Anyone with a middle or high school ID gets in for $3. Otherwise, entry fee is $5.

Other future plans are to have a fingerprint scanner to better track patrons, for security purposes.

“Once this system is in place it will help us keep track of the kids. It helps us and parents know who’s here and who’s not,” Delgado said. “It also allows us a way to either deny or keep a watchful eye out on someone.”

Later, his plans include opening an adult bar, but with a separate entrance — away from the teen club. It is to be called, Play!

A tentative grand opening for both Play! and Play Too! is May 9.

Although he grew up in Georgia and Florida, Delgado has lived in Ashmore for three years. In the cities, going to teen clubs was a norm.

“When I moved here, it was June, almost three years ago, and I would see kids around — at Wal-Mart, or running up and down streets, with nothing to do. I thought we needed to get them off the streets and give them something to do,” he said.

He’s taken on the new business venture at age 25, and wants to give Mattoon-Charleston area youth a safe place to be with friends, dance, eat and enjoy being a young person.

He’s optimistic the business will be a hit.

Mattoon businesswoman Nancy Keating has had a similar experience with teen clubs.

“Mattoon is an awesome town and it needs something like this,” she said.

The former owner of E.L. Krackers in Charleston offered a teen night once a week for many years.

“I think it is a great idea — but we had our problems. But that’s not to say it will happen here,” she said.

Play Too! is situated a distance away from where Play! will be, so younger patrons won’t ever be mixing with the adults, Delgado said.

The only people over the age of 20 in Play Too! will be staff and parents who choose to visit.

On opening night last week, Play Too! sold whole pizza pies from Pizza Hut and snacks.

The club is open from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Parents are encouraged to come in starting at 7 p.m. to look around and visit to find out more about the new club, Delgado said.

He said he realizes that being a new business, it might be difficult for a parent to drop off a child without being able to check it out first.

Keating’s son, Mattoon High School sophomore Alex Keating, was among the first customers to enter the club.

“There were kids of all ages there, but mostly middle school ages. There was also a high school dance that night. I heard the next night (last Saturday) was a bigger crowd.”

Keating said the $3 entry fee (with his school ID) was “a pretty good value.” He spent much of the evening watching or playing videogames and the Guitar Hero competitions.

“If they come here and have a good time, and they go out and tell their friends, we will succeed,” said Delgado, who previously worked as a corporate trainer for Chili’s Bar and Grill.

Delgado said a group of friends like John Blake, Carrie and Jason Sluder, all of Ashmore, and Delane Young of Kansas are helping to get the club off and running.

The group is concentrating on getting the right music in the club for the patrons. Opening night featured Oakland’s Christian rock band, fortyminusone.

“This (new club) should give the teens something to do on Fridays and Saturdays, but keep Sundays open to be home with their parents,” Delgado said.

His staff wants to offer live music and recorded music spun by a DJ. Play Too! wants to bring in other area bands of different genres.

“We’ve played at a lot of youth centers over the years, many of which were Christian-based. Unfortunately a lot of them have closed the doors,” said fortyminusone guitarist Craig Hunt of Oakland.

Hunt, who has served as a youth minister, believes teens need a safe place to go. He believes in Oakland’s Christian youth center, called The Hub, now four years’ strong.

“I think it is a great idea to give teens a place to go. When given a choice a lot of kids will choose the safer, but still entertaining option,” Hunt said.

Hunt also was pleased with the stage set-up, which had proper lighting and sound equipment in place.

“That’s always a plus,” he said. “The opening night went really smooth.”

As a parent of two young children, Hunt liked that the owners want parents to come in and see what the club is all about.

“I would always recommend parents check it out, meet the new owners and see what is inside. It is a club.”

Delgado said after the staff understands exactly what the teens are interested in by way of music, games and food, it could determine its destiny.

“We have to be able to give what the youth want in order to be successful,” Delgado said. “After our first weekend open the kids are saying they had a blast. They had a wonderful time.”

And to Julio and Medic57...
As far as the hotel rooms in close proximity...if it is YOUR kids that are going then YOU teach YOUR kids right and wrong!
Just because a handful of kids make bad decisions does not mean we punish them all.
If we don't give the kids something to do then they WILL find the wrong things to do. Give it a chance...this just might surprise you.
To Abel Delgado... GOOD LUCK! I HOPE THIS IS A GREAT SUCCESS!!! "

The last one Mattoon had to be closed due to the riffraff coming in from Terre Haute and Decatur, bringing in drugs and gang activity. I predict that element will be back, once they find out about this new club. It would be nice to see this one succeed, but historically they never last more than a year or two at the most. "

The Question wrote on Mar 25, 2008 7:59 AM:

" Rotty and Harry are both right. I've seen in a dozen or teen centers created in my life, and all failed within a year or so. For some reason, people always refuse to learn from experience here, and a bunch of wide-eyed Pollyannas inevitably turns up to propose yet another one. "

" lets look at it from a teen's p.o.v, medic. skating is for kids. in a theater you have to watch the movie, not just hang out and talk. which leaves the mall. which apparently IS good enough because thats where a lot of them end up. but guess what? mall employees aren't babysitters. they shouldn't have to keep an eye on the noisy lil boogers just cause the parents don't want them around. instead, mall workers have to deal with the loud, rude, uncouth children that can potentially run out actual customers. obviously not ALL teens are that way, but a lot of them are once they get away from mommy and daddy. "

Todd Reardon wrote on Mar 25, 2008 8:59 AM:

I hope this place makes it, but I believe 14 year olds and 20 year olds do not mix well. Perhaps rotate nights between younger and older might help alleviate the concerns of posters.

krusayda wrote on Mar 25, 2008 11:27 AM:

It is all a great concept and hopefully will provide a safe, drug-free environment with no sexual advances or temptations to use drugs and alcohol, but the reality is that outside influences, yes, from Decatur and Terre Haute will be here soon, and the results will be..well, let's wait and see. I am just glad that my daughter will not be a patron. "

We weren't talking about at the city limits, but surely they could be kept from going into Teen Centers! If they have wheels to travel all the way here, they certainly don't need to sabotage our teen centers! And we don't need them interfering with our efforts to keep our teens out of trouble! "

HisChild, it's a game some kids are into, possibly going into Isaak's place, out on Old State Road, south of Mattoon. "

Does anyone agree?
"

HerChild wrote on Mar 25, 2008 9:22 PM:

" The Question, I for one am not familiar with the federal laws on public accommodation, if you are, please explain. Meanwhile down on the farm...if you have to be a certain age to enter a bar, have to live in town to drop off landscape waste, have to pay for a library membership if you do not live within the city limits, have to find your own transportation for your children to get to school if you are within a certain mileage of that school...so public places do have their ways of limiting who takes advantage of what services. There is no reason whatsoever for teens from other cities to be present and cause trouble in a teen center outside of their own. If they want to push the issue, let them start a teen center in their own town! "

" Absolutely a good attempt !!!! I am pleased that someone wants to take the time and effort to provide a safe environment with activities for youth. I think this will have to be monitored extremely well, but that can be done. I have worked with kids in the past and I know how their little minds think. Plus I was a teen myself once or twice.

You can't always think..."this isn't going to work out, because things like this, has not in the past". Be positive and supportive. Trust that the kids that come, will no right from wrong, and hope that they are there for the right reason...to have a good time.

They should enforce the "zero-tolerance" policy. You act up...you are OUT !!! There will be some kids that will try anything. Everyone knows that.

Kids will be checking the feedback out on this place, I'm sure of that. If they are hearing a bunch of negative things....#1...some might not come. #2 Others might think...lets just act up and see what they do...because there is negativity.

It will be nice if they have live bands come in sometimes. I hope they will have flyers for these events.

AJ13721...I agree with you about the location of this place. The Ramada Inn is a motel and generally motels, offer an unwanted opportunity for kids. I don't know what kind of plan the Teen Club and the Ramada Inn have intact, but that would have to be closely watched. Many motels rent rooms to people 18 and over, and if this club is allowing 18 to 20 year olds into the club, well go figure. Even a 21 year old could rent the room and have their own little party, just down the hall, so this needs to be WATCHED !!!! Too many kids, drink, smoke, party, do drugs. Kids need something like this, but it is a tilt-a-whirl of an approach. Good Luck PLAY TOO !!!!

" As I recall, EL Krackers was available to teens for more than 10 years (at least) that I remember. There are not a lot of options for our teenagers these days. Okay, it is part of a hotel/motel. Kids will find a way to do things no matter where they are at. My daughter has attended the "teen nights" at the Ramada and she and her friends have had fun.

I just make sure she goes with a group and we drop her off and pick her up. The trust lies in the upbringing. I remember enjoying having Krackers as a place to go and have fun, my daughter will hopefully remember having somewhere she went and had fun. After all, the movies, mall, and bowling alleys are only so much fun for these kids so many weeks in a row. It's nice to have a bit of variety and I commend the owners for at least giving it a try!!!

She has asked to go to the Mattoon club, but now that I know there will be kids there up to 20 I am hesitant to let her go. I think it would be a better idea to have a young teen night (13 to 15)and an older teen night (16 to 19). I do think the club is a great idea. Our teens need something safe and fun to do on the weekends. Hopefully there will be adequate supervision. "

snoopybe28 wrote on Mar 31, 2008 1:00 AM:

" Well I can understand everyones concerns. I myself have had many issues and decided to go check it out. Guys I have to tell you, The Owner seems to have it all together. While I was there, Channel 3 was there, and so was WAND. He has several people on staff. I counted 3 that worked the Refreshment, Front Door and DJ. Along with 5 security. He means Business out there. I couldnt get through the side doors going into the hotel, due to security. They just wouldnt let me out or in. I also noticed the staff all has Radios, i guess this is for constant communications.

I have two children that i was leary on allowing to attend. I called the Club, came out early to check it out and came back in and they were very friendly and easy going. Im very comfortable now allowing my children to attend the club.

I actually witnessed the staff dealing with a young man who was very upset and i quess wanted to fight. The staff was very professional and told the young man to leave. THEY WOULD NOT PUT UP WITH THE FIGHTS.

My suggestions would be to go check it out. Comments are ok, but go see for your self. I hear they have been having great turn outs..........
"

Playtoo2008 wrote on Mar 31, 2008 1:16 PM:

" Hello everyone, I have heard that there was several comments going on in regards to the PLAY TOO.

I want everyone to know that i have been reading the concerns and have looked at suggestions. We are doing everything possiable to make sure the teens are safe and has a safe zone.

My main objective was to open a Safe place for young adults to go hang out, dance ect, with out the peer pressure of Drinking, sex, or any other types of peer pressure that is out there (Im sure there are far many more than when I was a teen).

We have successfully opened and have had a wonderful response to the club.

Allow me to awnser some issues:

Julio: Even though the Club is in the Ramada, The facility is HUGE. We have many different opportunities available to do many different thigns. Plus we are working with the Hotel to make changes and to improve the area.

Medic57: Just because a few places was not a go, why the negative response. Who is to say this wont go? EL Krackers was successful, with a few issues, and I have had the time to speak with the Owner and she voiced her concerns not only to me but also on record. We will not tollerate disruptance. We have no issues with Banning young adults from our club. 2. We do not allow open containers in or out of the building. We can not search a person, however if we see, smell, or have a reasonable doubt, we will contact the authorities and ask them to leave.

Harry Potter: As the word passes around im sure we will see some out of the out of towners. Acutally we already have. Issues are dealt with and taken care of. We make it clear we want nothing Illegal, imorale, or unethical in our club. We will catch it and when we do they are out. We recently had to bann two young men, from mattoon due to picking Fights. Our attendance raised 20% the next night.

The Question. We are eager about creating an place for kids to have a good time. Why not check us out for yourself. I think you will be supprised.

Todd Reardon: Our goal is for 14 to 20 year olds. In the last 4 weeks we have only seen 3 20 year olds, and they have left. They had better things to do. Everyone has to check in with ID. this allows us to monitor who is there and the age groups. If something doesnt look right we check it out. NO ONE OVER THE AGE OF 21 comes in to the club unless your a parent.

AJ. Come out and see for yourself. Im sure once you do, a lot of questions, concerns will be awnsered.

We are looking into doing everything possiable to make this a safe place for the kids. We understand concerns, however why not give us a chance? COME OUT AND SEE FOR YOURSELF. We may be at the Ramda Inn, however we have reseached this facility, checked out all federal, and state laws, along with 2 attorneys on staff advising us along the way. We are very comfortable knowing we are doing this by the book. As always suggestions, ideas, comments are always welcome and please contact us. Check out myspace for up todate information on whats going on.

I appriciate the comments of support by some of the readers, and I hope you all have the opportunity to EXSPERIANCE PLAY. As most parents live through their children. Children live by example.
