Tarble opens show featuring award-winning work from EIU



CHARLESTON — The Eastern Illinois University Art Department has announced the recipients of the 2008 All-Student Show awards and the 2008 departmental awards. The recipients were recognized at an awards reception held Sunday at the Tarble Arts Center on the EIU campus.

Chosen by the 2008 All-Student Show jury panel, the Best-of-Show award went to Katherine Young (Mount Vernon) for her computer animation entry “CSO Events.” Meagan Geiger-Powell (Fox River Grove) received the Heyduck Ceramics Award for her untitled vase. And the Knoop Sculpture Award was given to Lei Curtis (LaGrange) for her mixed media piece titled “Who Needs Brains ...”

Merit awards, selected by the jurors in designated media categories, were presented to the following student artists: Ceramics — Dan McLaughlin (Orland Park), “Coral Tubes,” stoneware; Design — Elizabeth Turrisi (Joliet), “Ripened,” plaster; Digital Art — Tim Jarosz (Norridge), for his three digital prints; Drawing — Eric Rusk (Hoffman Estates), “Untitled,” charcoal; Electronic Media — Tyler Munie (Highland), “CSO Movie,” computer animation; Fiber — Kathy Bryant (Charleston), “Savanna Sunset,” fibers; Graphic Design — Stephanie Ruholl (Teutopolis), “Abuse,” computer-generated graphics; Jewelry/Metals — Brian Wolf (Bolingbrook), “Calling It Quits,” mixed media; Painting — Amy Edwards (Vandalia), “OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder),” oil; and Printmaking — Taylor Bennett (Decatur), “Vanity,” intaglio.

Honorable Mention awards were given by the jurors to the following students for the entries listed: Lei Curtis, “Baited For The Evening,” mixed media; Brian Wolf, “Sprout Pill Bottle,” copper/nickel silver; Kyle Tonn (Charleston), “Is It Soup Yet?,” charcoal; Taylor Bennett, “Proudmoore,” graphite pencil; Crystal Means (Oakley), “The Heated Debate,” intaglio; Elizabeth Niemeyer, “What’s his-story?,” linocut; Shane Rodems (Charleston), “The Village Idiot Finds Oil?”, oil; and Jessica Freudenberg (Crete), “Oops!,” oil.

In addition to the exhibition award recipients the following students’ entries make up the 2008 All-Student Show: Sarah Altenburg (Oak Lawn), Jillian Benoit (Kankakee), Christopher D. Bierman (Teutopolis), Tabitha Brown (Effingham), Michael C. Caifano (Chicago), Lauren Curta (Downers Grove), Alice Ellsworth (Clinton), Katherine S. Fisher (Normal), Lisa Freund (O’Fallon), Danielle Halpin (Carol Stream), Brittney Hanley (Toledo), Sara Huber (Fithian), Jamie Kemp (Chatham), Jason Kohlmann (Waterman), Kyle Kuzmich (Ottawa), Dennis E. Lewis (Champaign), Candace Manning (Palos Park), Lexi Mayberry (Mount Vernon), Mary McKeating (Evergreen Park), Courtney Meese (Catlin), Rebecca Merar (Gurnee), Megan Morrison (Hoffman Estates), Nathan Motsinger (Highland), Amanda Mullison (Carbondale), Ashley Owens (Ina), Megan Patchin (Plainfield), Richard Raggi (Glenview), Stephanie Ruholl (Teutopolis), Melissa Schaefer (Lombard), Laura Smoltich (DeKalb), Tera Swango (Charleston), Amanda Swinda (Lanark), Lauren Taylor (Glenview), Elizabeth Turrisi (Joliet), Sean Walker (Vandalia) and Nick Wood (Decatur).

The Art Department faculty also selected students for awards and recognitions. This year the students receiving named departmental awards were: Paul T. Sargent Award — Lei Curtis and Katherine Young; Calvin Countryman Award — Lexi Mayberry and Andrea Blaser (Monticello); Irene Couchman Buzzard Scholarship — Lei Curtis; Miranda Rice Weiss Art History Scholarship — Robie Buchholz (Harrisburg); Paul Rand Award — Jason Kohlmann and Sarah Altenburg; Graphic Design Recognition Award — Danielle LaPenta (Lake Zurich) and Leon Kelsick (Charleston); Susan Stephens Memorial Award — Laura Smoltich and Kristy Goeckner (Dieterich).

The departmental Outstanding Senior Awards went to: Art Education — Jennifer Dunavan (Rossville); Art History — Robie Buchholz; Graphic Design — Katherine Young and Tyler Munie; Studio 3-D — Lei Curtis; and Studio 2-D — Jessica Freudenberg. And the Chairman’s Award was presented to Lei Curtis.

Students at Eastern who had taken at least one undergraduate studio art course during the academic year were eligible to participate in the competition. The jury panel selected 104 works for

the exhibition out of 253 entries. Represented are 52 students out of the 74 who entered. Serving as jurors were Randy Carlson, Bradley University; Steven Hudson, Parkland College; and John Sherman, Notre Dame University.

The 2008 All-Student Show will remain on exhibition through March 30 at the Tarble Arts Center. Admission is free and the public is invited. The center will be closed on the Sundays of March 9 for the annual systems check and March 23 for Easter.

The Tarble Arts Center is located on south Ninth Street at Cleveland Avenue on the EIU campus in Charleston. Open hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday; closed Mondays. For information call 581-ARTS (-2787) or e-mail tarble@eiu.edu.
