While awaiting a doctor’s report later today, Eastern Illinois basketball coach Mike Miller was not optimistic about Julio Anthony’s return from Saturday’s clavicle injury.
“I am not anticipating he will play Thursday,” Miller said during Monday morning’s Ohio Valley Conference coaches’ teleconference.
Anthony, a senior guard averaging 9.3 points per game before Saturday but an even bigger offensive force the second half of the season when scoring leader Romain Martin was sidelined by injury, was hurt during the first half of Saturday’s 63-55 loss to Evansville in an ESPNU Bracketbuster game at Lantz Arena.
If Anthony cannot play, that would leave the Panthers with eight scholarship players available for Thursday’s 7:15 p.m. game at Lantz Arena against Jacksonville State, the two teams currently tied for last in the OVC at 4-14.
“Who’s counting them?” Miller said with a laugh. “It’s been a year. I was looking at something (Sunday). Due to injury, strictly due to injury, we’ve missed 55 games because of injury and only three guys have played every game. It certainly has made an impact. I really think our group has been resilient. I really have not been disappointed with our effort in practice or games.”
