Historic school house demolished for new pharmacy

SULLIVAN — A longtime landmark along the main thoroughfare in Sullivan is in the process of being demolished.

Demolition has begun on the Old School Market at the intersection of Illinois Route 121 and Illinois Route 32, a site that in recent years has been a restaurant and market but was previously an elementary school.

The building is being demolished to make way for a CVS Pharmacy in that location.

The Old School Market building dates back to 1925, when it housed kindergarten through second-grade classes as the Powers School.

The building was sold at auction in June 1996 after the Sullivan school district built a new elementary school on the north side of town.

After the school closed, new owner Wayne Yoder ran the Old School Market out of the building for 11 years and the market was a popular spot to eat and to shop for crafts and furniture.

Yoder announced to the Old School Market’s approximately 40 employees last October that the business would be closing.

In October, Yoder said that the decision to close the school house was a difficult one but he and his family wanted to pursue other interests.

“The old building drew us to the location, but maintenance and repairs get overwhelming and you come to a point where you make a choice and we took the opportunity,” Yoder said.

He could not be reached for comment on Monday.

The final day for the Old School Market was Nov. 17.

" I wish they would have left it alone! There are other places here in Sullivan that they could have put CVS! They say that the old jail house is a historical landmark, but yet they are not tearing it down. So, why tear down the school when it is a landmark as well? I just don't get it? Sullivan don't you know how to use your heads? "
