Eastern students, Effingham residents send help to tornado-ravaged Union University

EFFINGHAM — After loading up donations from Eastern Illinois University and the Effingham community Wednesday, a 26-foot long U-Haul truck will be heading toward Jackson, Tenn., today carrying some relief for the students of Union University.

Students at Eastern Illinois University have spent the last several days stocking up the Office of Orientation with supplies to send to Union University, which was hit by tornadoes that struck across the South in early February. A tornado destroyed a considerable amount of housing at the university, leaving hundreds of students without a home on campus.

Ashley Hubbard of Effingham was a student at Union University until last spring and has returned to visit friends there five times in the last year. This time, when she drives down to Tennessee, she will have a much different mission.

She will be taking along a truckload of donations from Eastern and Effingham and staying in town to help with the cleanup effort.

Hubbard was pleased when she arrived at Eastern on Wednesday night and saw the amount of items that had been donated.

“I was very surprised there was an amazing amount of stuff in Charleston at Eastern and I was not expecting that amount of stuff,” Hubbard said.

Many of the donations were clothes, coats and blankets, along with some school supplies, toiletry items and even DVDS.

The U-Haul that Hubbard is driving down to Tennessee is going to be packed full, she said. Another truck full of items will be following behind her.

Hubbard said she knows all the items donated will be appreciated by the students at Union.

“They literally lost everything,” she said.
