Cumberland student wins spelling bee this morning

NEOGA — Jackson Green misspelled the word “escargot” at last year’s regional spelling bee in Decatur. And while the time in between crept by at a snail’s pace, the wait is finally over.

Green, an eighth grader at Cumberland Junior High School, is returning to regionals following his repeat victory in the Cumberland County Spelling Bee this morning at the Neoga Junior-Senior High School.

The 13-year-old son of Fred Hudson of Charleston and Amanda Hudson of Greenup correctly spelled “polka” to advance to the next round March 15 in Decatur, the winner of which goes on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Brandon Maroon, a Neoga seventh grader, was second.

Maroon is the son of Steve and LeeAnn Maroon of Neoga.
