Cumberland spelling bee Thursday features two contestants

NEOGA -- The Cumberland County Spelling Bee at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Neoga Junior High could be one of the briefest on record. After all, there are only two spellers slated to take the floor.

Officials with Cumberland and Neoga schools were under the misconception initially that they had to narrow down the field of competitors to one from each school district before the county-wide bee. They did that. So that means Cumberland eighth grader Jackson Green and Neoga seventh grader Brandon Maroon will be the lone representatives of their school districts.

"It's kind of mixed up this year," said Cynthia Bankson, Neoga Junior High English teacher, who is hosting the truncated bee in her classroom Thursday.
