LETTER: Vote for Obama if you care about America

We urge all Coles County residents interested in bringing about a new direction for our country to vote for Barack Obama in the Democratic primary on Feb. 5. Senator Obama is working to unify — not further polarize — our country. His record in the Illinois Senate and the United States Senate demonstrates his ability to find common ground with others and get things done. While other political campaigns aim to win by smearing the opposition, by saying anything that offers temporary gain, the Obama campaign inspires us to believe that we can change our country for the better.

We are impressed by a candidate whose message has moved so many young adults to become involved in the political process. And we believe that an Obama presidency would do much to repair the damage of George W. Bush’s eight years in office and change the way people around the world see the United States.

This election is not about color or gender. It’s about our chance to change our country for the better. On Feb. 5, Illinois voters can help make that happen. Yes we can.

ELAINE FINE and

MICHAEL LEDDY

Charleston

Yeah I know, tired old cliche's.. When it comes to bigotry though, Question might want to examine himself. He doesn't have a problem spewing forth his hate and distain for those he has on his "hit list" of folks he has bigoted feelings toward. That list includes:

1.Conservatives
2.Any Republican, even those who don't care much for George W, Bush whom he calls monkey man, the chimp, simian, dubya, and other assorted pet names.
3.People of faith, especially Christians.
4.The military. Don't you know our soldiers are nothing but murderer's?
5. Cops. A huge majority of them are nothing more than thugs, don't cha know?
5.People who don't agree with his superior opinions bolstered by his superior intellect.
6..People whose grammar and spelling are not the best. Forget about the content. Let's judge them solely on their spelling and sentence structure abilities. Note: It seems as though Mr. Perfect made a spelling error and felt the need to explain it to us. He used instinct instead of extinct when referring to Doh-doh bird. Oops!
He doesn't have a problem calling ALL Republicans names such as fascists, warmongers, Nazis, liars, morons, thugs, and so on ad nauseum. He sticks everyone who doesn't go along with him in a pigenhole in his desk with a pet label. He has a lot of nerve to call ANYONE a bigot!.. By the way, I'm looking very closely at all the candidates running for president. I assure you a man or woman's middle name, or his or her religion will not be the deciding reason for me to vote or not to vote for them. I've voted for Democrats and Republicans all my voting life. I will continue to pick and choose the ones for whom I want to vote. ...Bigots! Get real Question! "

Actually Lysol's comments were pretty tame compared to some of the other stuff that's floating around out there. If he gets the nomination, look for the nastiest smear campaign in history. " Whether Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama - now that the ridiculous primary system has prematurely left us with only two Democratic candidates - they need to be asked legitimate, tough questions in these so-called debates. There have been NO questions about NAFTA, not one! They should have both been asked about their ties, whether to Tony Rezko or Saudi Arabia or China. Hillary needs to be held accountable for her role (and secrecy and ties to the insurance industry) in the failure of health care reform at a unique time when the polled citizenry was eager for it. She destroyed that momentum and now she claims to want health care reform. Hillary needs to be questionned about her role as a WalMart Board of Directors member and her reported silence when WM workers were trying to organize - even while she touts her endorsement from UFWA! She in particular needs to be questionned about NAFTA, about trade and the dramatic trade imbalance - especially with China and how it relates to corporations, WalMart, labor, national security, etc. - and other economic issues. To Julio: the writers were not talking about investigating extra-marital affairs (which DO relate to character though), they were talking about finances, supporters, potential influence, potential corruption, questionable ties to other figures, secrecy, obstruction, transparency, honesty - and the like - all demanding of scrutiny. The Clintons would seem to have citizens believe that they are somehow ENTITLED to be president. I find Obama inspiring and charismatic and am very aware of the sense of hope for unity that he carries, but I still want to know the facts - and the real positions of these two candidates on NAFTA, on the environment, on energy. Finally, it seems that Obama may be starting to be too obsequious to Hillary, in an effort not to be "negative", but he's going to have to fight to beat the Clintons and the mesmerized cult of personality that surrounds them. The Clintons remade the Democratic Party into their own image, co-opted Republican ideas of the time, and the Democratic Party has been virtually indistinguishable from the Republican Party ever since the Clintons took over. Bill even tried to worm his way into Bush 41's affection! It's way past time to wrest the Dem. Party from the Clintons' control and make it a Democratic party again, not a branch of the Republican Party. Likewise for the Republican Party - which used to stand for social liberty and fiscal conservatism. Boy, did they ever turn that upside down! "

Corruption and a massive cover-up organized at the highest levels of government – America's nuclear secrets and technology looted on a massive scale, and sold to our enemies via a network set up by our alleged foreign "friends," while the threat of nuclear terrorism hangs over our country like a thick fog of fear, and warmongering politicians scare us into going along with the program – if even half of what Edmonds alleges turns out to be true, then we are all in some very big trouble.

" Sibel Edmonds, the Turkish FBI translator turned whistleblower who has been subjected to a gag order could provide a major insight into how neoconservatives distort US foreign policy and enrich themselves at the same time. On one level, her story appears straightforward: several Turkish lobbying groups allegedly bribed congressmen to support policies favourable to Ankara. But beyond that, the Edmonds revelations become more serpentine and appear to involve AIPAC, Israel and a number of leading neoconservatives who have profited from the Turkish connection.

The Giraldi piece is short and to the point, and described by Edmonds as "100% right", so we recommend you give it a quick read.

As Luke further explains in his helpful summation:
Sibel's case involves illegal weapons sales, money laundering, drug trafficking, nuclear black market, terrorism and the corruption of the US Govt.

Sibel has already named names (though not all) - Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, William Cohen, Marc Grossman, Eric Edelman, Dennis Hastert, Bob Livingston and others - and she has also named the countries involved: Turkey, Israel, Pakistan, the other 'Stans - and of course the US. "

" The blatant lies these right-wing scum spread about Obama are sickening. Have you no decency, sirs? At long last, have you no decency? "

" Here's a thought, Question. Do you suppose Karl Rove might be playing a role behind the scenes in any of this? A lot of these comments have the stench of Rove all over them. We all remember his racists tactics used against John McCain after McCain beat Bush in New Hampshire? I see that as a possibility. I'm having a hard time believing that that little weasel is sitting out this election, even though I see the folks at the Faux news channel are giving him a paycheck. Having said that, I can't imagine McCain, who surely knew that Rove was the architect behind the racists attempts to destroy him would want anything to do with that reprobate. But I can certainly see the Republican National Committee using Rove and his unethical tactics once again, after all he is the darling of the Republican Party. If Obama gets the bid, I can see Rove leading the racist's efforts to destroy him. Certainly McCain won't be able to do that, and in fact will probably decry any comments made about Obama, while secretly cheering them on. "

" I agree, Harry. This has the earmarks of a Rove operation.
This will be the ugliest election in living memory, so fasten your seat belts.

MediaMatters is reporting that FOX News Radio host Tom Sullivan "aired 'side-by-side comparison' of speeches by Hitler and Obama" yesterday 2/13/08.
They continue "Fox News Radio host Tom Sullivan took a call from a listener who stated that when listening to Barack Obama speak, "it harkens back to when I was younger and I used to watch those deals with Hitler, how he would excite the crowd and they'd come to their feet and scream and yell." Sullivan then played a "side-by-side comparison" of a Hitler speech and an Obama speech. Sullivan mimicked the crowd during both speeches, yelling, "Yay! Yay!" When a later caller complained that Sullivan was "denigrating" Obama with the comparison, Sullivan said he wouldn't play it
again, then begged: "Can I, please, one more time?
Just one more time? Then I won't do it again. ...
Until the next time."

" mccain will say anything or do anything if he thinks any kind of support will come from it.

and i agree, we're in for a big dose of karl rove. him spinning things is the only hope the GOP has. you can also bet he'll play the race card in a big way. there are already lies being said about obama's promises to his own pastor. "

The Question wrote on Feb 14, 2008 2:01 PM:

" By the way, Harry, McCain has been cozying up to Rove, despite what Rove did to McCain's family. And McCain, the great anti-torture crusader, just voted in favor of waterboarding. So much for "principle." So much for "straight talk."
Whatever he once was, McCain is now just another GOP creep who will do anything to get elected.
Anything.
Well, we'll see how his promise of a 100-year war plays in Peoria. McCain is going to need some really dirty tricks to win this, and the evil Gerber Baby Rove has got 'em. "
