CHARLESTON — In its seventh year on campus, “Beyond Words: Museum of Oppression” continues to provide insight into the issue of oppression through a self-guided, historical and experiential walking tour.
Sponsored by Eastern Illinois University’s Office of University Housing & Dining Services, this annual three-day event will be presented to the community through Wednesday in the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.
Participants are invited to walk through a series of sensory experiences presented through the written word, audio, video and staged displays to gain a realistic perspective of what marginalized groups have faced in our society.
“Those who walk through the museum will be able to get a glimpse of a world where individuals have been, and continue to be, oppressed because of their differences,” said Resident Director Quiana Stone, the committee chair of Housing & Dining’s committee for Social Justice and Diversity Education. “We want people to experience oppression through the eyes of different cultural groups and maybe learn a little something about themselves in the process.”
Entry is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday. It should take 30 to 35 minutes to complete the tour.
“Additionally, the Black Student Union, in collaboration with the NAACP, will be performing live skits during the day’s events,” added Stone.
This year, adding to the museum’s experience, is a series of free activities that will be held in the Grand Ballroom in the evenings.
James Harden from the EIU School of Education presented the keynote address on Monday.
At 7 p.m. today is the reading of the Paul Laurence Dunbar poem, “We Wear The Mask.” After the reading, the stage will be opened to the public to share their own related poems, music, or short stories.
At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Charles Eberly from the EIU School of Education will present national lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual fraternity and sorority research that reveals improvements despite harassment.
