Stabbing becomes robbery case with arrests of teens

MATTOON — Two teenagers face attempted burglary and battery charges for an incident that sent one of them to the hospital with a knife wound in his chest, Mattoon Deputy Police Chief Adam Weinstock said.

Cody J. Parsons, 18, of Neoga, and Aaron C. Jordan, 18, 212 Oklahoma Ave., Mattoon, who was wounded with a knife in the incident,  were arrested this week on charges of  attempted robbery and aggravated battery, Weinstock explained. Both Parsons and Jordan were taken to Coles County jail. Parsons is held on $50,000 bond, while Jordan has a $30,000 bond linked to his charges.

Jordan was stabbed in the chest by Glen E. Leonard, 49, of 1205 Champaign Ave. Leonard later told police he was the victim of a robbery attempt by two white males.

Jordan was treated at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center after the incident, first reported as a stabbing at 8:25 p.m. Sunday in the area of 14th Street and Shelby Avenue. Jordan’s injuries were described as non-life threatening.

Leonard told officers he was outside his home Sunday when he was struck numerous times by two males and they had tried to remove items from his pockets. That is when he used his knife to defend himself.

As the investigation continued, Parsons was first charged in the incident, while police waited until Jordan was released from medical care Tuesday to arrest him. Parsons knows Leonard due to a relationship the teenager had with one of Leonard’s relatives, Weinstock stated.
