Catchings likely to miss EIU's game tonight

CHARLESTON - Mike Miller recites some statistics off the top of his head.

Eastern Illinois’ basketball coach counts a total of 22 missed games by Panthers 11 games into this season.

After tonight, only four Panthers will have played in all 12 games.

Miller is already erasing his senior Bobby Catchings from that played-them-all list, taking the 6-foot-6 forward’s 12.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game out of the equation as Eastern is to visit Bowling Green in today’s 6 p.m. non-conference contest.

Catchings sprained an ankle in last week’s loss at Morehead State and Eastern is just hoping to have him back when Ohio Valley Conference play resumes with Thursday’s home game against Murray State.

Sophomore forward Justin Brock is likely to miss more games than that as his recovery from a foot injury continues.

“What we’re looking at as a positive is this is giving other guys opportunities and in the long run it is going to help us,” Miller said. “Everyone has these stretches and we understand when we have the full team it will make us even better. Even with the injuries we’ve played our three best games back-to-back-to-back.”

Improved performances in losses of 74-72 to Tennessee State, 72-69 to Eastern Kentucky and 80-75 to Morehead State have not stopped a 10-game losing streak that stands as the longest in EIU’s NCAA Division I era that began in 1981-82.

The Panthers are 1-10 going into this game against a Bowling Green team that has its own four-game losing streak capped by a 62-57 Dec. 22 defeat at Indiana State dropping the Falcons to 4-6.

The Mid-American Conference Bowling Green team is in its first season under coach Louis Orr, the former Syracuse star who previously coached Seton Hall.

“I would say their style is similar to Syracuse,” Miller said. “They play the 2-3 zone that Syracuse does but they will also play some man.”

For a couple of weeks or more Miller has talked about conference play defining a team’s season.

This is Eastern’s last non-conference game other than a still to be announced ESPNU BracketBusters pairing on Feb. 23 but Miller sees significance in tonight getting ready for the rest of league play.

“I think we continue to develop,” the EIU coach said.

“We’re still working in our two new guys (freshmen Tyler Laser and Matt Dorlack). We’re counting on those two and their injuries have limited them. Everybody has a game after Christmas to get ready for their conference season.”

" I like the excuses Mike "

" I wish everyone would just give Mike Miller a break! I suspect anyone who is complaining is a Rick Samuels' fan. I like Rick Samuels, too, but he is no longer coach, and that certainly is not Mike Miller's fault! He didn't make the decision! It's pretty sad that most people are fair weathered fans and only go to see or cheer for a team when they are winning. We should support a team whether they are winning or losing. That makes a true EIU fan! I hope anyone that is judging Mike has actually been a coach themselves or tried coaching. Otherwise, they need to keep their mouth shut! "

" We have given Miller a break-3yrs! And yes I liked Coach Samuels but he is no longer here. I am only commenting on Mike Miller's record which speaks for itself. We lost again last night. That's 11 losses in a row. Per the article we have already broken our longest losing streak record. We are dead last in the RPI poll. Once again, all we get from Miller are excuses. But I never hear Miller take responsibility for the losses. It seems to me he is always pointing to his players and pointing out what they are not doing. It's always the guys aren't executing some part of his ridiculous offensive scheme, or they have too many turnovers, or we need to "define" ourselves. There never is any self examination. It's always some one elses fault, namely the players. Bottom line is this, Coach Miller's offensive scheme does not work. These guys are playing their hearts out and still losing. I don't care if the point spread they lose by is getting smaller. A loss is a loss and eleven losses in a row is hard for anyone to take. I take my hat off to the players. They play hard in spite of the coaching. It's time they are rewarded for all of their hard work and win some games. Unfortunately all coach Miller knows how to do is make excuses for losing rather than come up with a winning offensive scheme. Mike go back to the drawing board the triangle is obsolete. Try something new for a change. You just might like the results. "

" To Bob; Give Miller a chance? Since he's been here his record is 17-52. How much more of a chance do you suppose we should give him?? "

" I don't see where Miller is making excuses. "We're still working in our new guys..." Is that the excuse? Look, I think the best thing EIU could have done a few years ago was hire a young, energetic coach who played big-time ball someplace and wants to get into coaching. Somebody who the kids (students and players) could identify with. Some 25-year-old who could come in with fire and passion and spend about 4 years at Eastern before moving on to a bigger program. Eastern should be a stepping-stone job. There's nothing wrong with that. I don't think Miller's the answer, but I certainly don't think we should have stuck with Samuels forever. The program was in steady decline when Samuels was let go, don't kid yourself. And I NEVER heard Rick Samuels take the blame for a loss, folks. I listened to as many post-game interviews as I could (still do), and Rick loved to say, "players need to make plays....we're not making any plays." I never heard him say, "this one's on the coach tonight....I really stunk it up out there." Apparently that's what you're suggesting Miller should say. "

" EIU fan:
What I am suggesting Miller should do is during his post game comments accept responsibility for his part in the loss. Believe it or not I have heard coaches say that he or she needs to make adjustments to their offense which suggests to me that the coach is looking at what he or she can do differently. Unfortunately Miller thinks his offense is working and the players are not properly executing it. I would like to hear Miller say just once that He needs to look at the offense, his offense, and make adjustments.
Miller also should look at the fact that every year he has been coach he has lost players either thru the player choosing to leave the program or thru graduation. Therefore every year he has to teach a brand new crop of players this offense. The offense is not working.Next year, if he remains, he will have at least 5 new players and that's hoping no one else decides to leave. However if things remain true to form I expect there will be at least one player leaving at the end of the season. That seems to be the pattern. Should Miller remain he will be in the same position he's been in the last 3 years and thats teaching this offense to yet another group of players and have yet another losing season. I agree with you with regards to the type of coach EIU needs to hire. Miller is "old school". I think he would be better suited coaching a high school team in some small rural town. Hopefully, EIU can buy out his contract and look for a young energetic coach who is familiar with today's type of player. "
