CHARLESTON — Modern art is the subject of an exhibition currently on view at the Tarble Arts Center, Eastern Illinois University.
Selected from the Tarble permanent collection, the exhibition is on view through Jan. 6 in the west main galleries. The exhibition is part of the Tarble’s ongoing showcase of art from its permanent collection as part of the year-long silver anniversary celebration, The Tarble at 25. (The Tarble Arts Center is closed for the holidays through Tuesday.)
Exhibited are paintings, woodcuts, intaglios and sculpture circa 1947 to 1980 that incorporate various elements of modernism. The art presents elements of cubism, surrealism, expressionism, abstract expressionism and other forms of abstraction.
Making up the exhibition are works by the nationally recognized artists Leonard Baskin (1922-2000), Lawrence Calcagno (1913-1993), Lee R. Chesney, Jr. (b. 1920), David Driesbach (b. 1922), John Livingston Ihle (1925-2002), Ron Kowalke (b. 1936) and Seong Moy (b. [China] 1921).
Also included is art from former EIU Art faculty members Ron Hinson (b. 1934), Carl Shull (1912-1993), Walter Sorge (b. [Canada] 1931), Lynn Trank (1918-2005) and Ben Watkins (1913-1993). Completing the exhibition is a painting by local Charleston artist (and former Champaign art teacher) Milburn H. Smith, and a sculpture by David L. Durham created while Durham completed his master’s in studio art at EIU.
Most of the original prints on exhibition were acquired by the Paul T. Sargent Gallery under the direction of Shull or printmaking professor Trank. (The Sargent Gallery served as the exhibition venue for Eastern from 1951 until it was absorbed by the Tarble Arts Center in 1982.) Most of the paintings were acquired as gifts from the artists.
The Tarble Arts Center is located on Ninth Street at Cleveland Avenue on the EIU campus in Charleston. Open hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, 1-4 p.m. Sunday; closed Mondays.
