New Life for Haiti fundraiser gala planned

MATTOON — New Life for Haiti is a grass roots partnership of Christians and churches coming together to make a difference in Haiti.

A fundraising gala is planned at 6 p.m. Jan. 12 at The Walkway, 1501 Lake Land Blvd. in Mattoon.

The partnership isn’t associated with any one church, but it is associated with local groups, said Pastor Brian Miller of The Crossover in Mattoon.

Several churches have helped start this grassroots partnership, including The Crossover, and Miller serves on the board of directors for New Life for Haiti.

“We want to invite people from the community. We know that we have people in this community who want to help out with the real needs of the people in Haiti — medical needs, schools — with a spiritual basis,” Miller said.

The gala, expected to be an elegant evening, is for adults only and includes dinner, speakers and musical entertainment by Amy White and the Ace of Clubs.

The meal, entertainment and dance are free.

The gala will include a request for donations in the New Life for Haiti organization. Also, anyone interested in taking a trip to Haiti should inquire.

RSVP is required by going online to www.newlifeforhaiti.org.

Several trips of area groups have been taken to the area and money being raised now will go toward finishing a school and a medical clinic for the residents in the poor area.

“Several of us from the area have gone to Haiti and we work side by side with the Haitians building schools and will start building a medical clinic soon,” Miller said.

Community development projects are designed to help people in the villages of the Grande Anse River Valley, a rural area south of Jeremie, the main city of the southern peninsula.

Haiti is the poorest country in this half of the world. The average family lives with an equivalent of $300 per year.
