Trojans can't contain Brinkley; Paris wins

PARIS - Chase Brinkley was in junior high the last time Paris beat Charleston. The Trojans might have wished that he had stayed there.

The junior scored 37 points and the Tigers nailed all 12 of their free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter to win their Apollo opener 63-59.

Brinkley got hot in the first half, knocking down 9-of-15 shots, and headed into the break with 20 points. He carried it into the third period, scoring nine more as Paris built a 47-37 lead.

“I think Brinkley is just a tremendous player,” Paris coach Terry Elston said. “He had an exceptional game tonight. The thing is, when they did some things to shut him down a little bit later on in the game, then we had some other guys stepping up and hitting some key free throws.”

When Charleston countered with a 12-2 run, tying the game on Eric Gentry’s 3-pointer with 4:21 left, Paris simply got to the foul line. Brinkley sank four straight and two more by Alex Barrett gave the team the lead for good, 55-54 with 1:56 left.

Barrett started for junior center Logan Henness, ailing with the flu, and added eight points and five rebounds.

Brinkley’s layup in transition gave Paris a 57-54 edge and had one more chance after Jamel Johnson wrestled down an offensive board and scored to make it 61-59 with 12 seconds left. But Mike Griffin found himself all alone on a long inbound pass and scored a layup to put the game away.

Trey Ryan had 18 points and nine rebounds and Johnson

15 points and nine rebounds for Charleston (2-3). Ryan and Johnson hit 13 of their 23 field-goal attempts but Paris’s 2-3 zone forced the Trojans to launch 3-pointers to no avail. They made just 4-of-20._ “We wanted to play zone because we knew they had the two big boys, Johnson and Ryan,” Brinkley said. “We wanted to make sure that they didn’t get inside shots and we just wanted to make sure that they if they made shots then we would adjust from there. The score shows that (we did).”

Turnovers plagued Charleston even more. It committed 13 in the first half and 24 for the game. Many of them were unforced, the result of a slew of traveling violations or ill-advised passes.

“You’ve got to give them credit,” Charleston coach Trevor Doughty said. “They outexecuted us. I know Brinkley scored a ton of points, but still. We had turnovers in the first half and we could have taken control of the game. Then in the third quarter we scored only 10 points.

“We didn’t make very good decisions. It wasn’t really just the guy with the basketball either. It was guys that weren’t moving and getting to the open spots.”

Paris improved to 3-2 despite getting outrebounded 43-23. But Elston was taking everything one step at a time.

“It’s a big win for us but we’re going to keep it in perspective,” he said. “We’ve kind of got the training wheels on right now. We played exceptionally well tonight but we’ve got to come back and sustain that next week against Robinson and Effingham. In the Apollo, if you don’t come ready to play it’s going to be a tough night.”

Charleston’s Clayton Murphy played for the first time this year after knee surgery, and finished with four points and seven rebounds.
