Sanders special mention all-state News-Gazette volleyball team

CHAMPAIGN -- Sullivan junior setter Emily Sanders was named to the special mention list of 50 by the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette 26th annual All-State volleyball team.
Sanders was also named to the 10-member News-Gazette first team all-area team and was one of four juniors on the squad, which included All-Area Player of the Year, Lucy Coleman of Monticello and Eastern Illinois University recruit Hannah Deterding. Deterding was also on the all-state special mention team.
Sanders, coached by Lindsay Blickenstaff, was fifth in the Journal-Gazette/Times-Courier area in assists with an average of 6.6 per game and led the area in aces with an average of 1.2 per contest. The Lady Redskins won back-to-back regional championships and finished 21-13, its second straight 20-win season.
Casey-Westfield’s Mackenzie Connelly was name to the honorable mention all-state list of 100. Connelly averaged 3.2 blocks and 2.2 kills per game for the 15-21 Lady Warriors, coached by Erin Leichty.
Tri-County, a team that won a regional championship, the Little Okaw Valley regular season and LOVC tournament titles and finished 26-10, had Chelsee Blair, a junior setter, on the 10-member second team. Blair, coached by Sarah Ritchey, averaged 8.8 assists per game, which was second in the J-G/T-C area.
Also named to the second team was Arcola junior Kim Fortney, who tied for second in the area in kills with an average of 3.4 per contest. Fortney helped the Lady Riders, coached by Kim East, to a 15-13 record.
Sullivan senior Brittne McMahan was one of 30 players named to the special mention all-area team by the News-Gazette.
Seven area players were among the 90 players to receive honorable mention all-area. They were Arcola’s Tara Holaday; Arthur’s Tiffany Beachy; Sullivan’s Haley Phelps and Lauren Taylor along with Tri-County’s Sadie Baird, Melanie Clapp and Kinsie Knox.
