Feds still at work on FutureGen report

Federal documents on helping pick a FutureGen generating plant site in Illinois or Texas are coming soon, but no estimate on their release was available Friday.

Last summer, Department of Energy officials predicted a final draft of the Environmental Impact Statement might be released by the end of October. On Friday, a DOE spokeswoman said officials are “working as quickly as possible” to get that work done.

The final Environmental Impact Statement will show the possible environmental consequences of the project that will build a coal-burning plant with advanced technology to produce near-zero emissions. Part of that technology will include long-term underground storage of carbon dioxide emissions from the plant.

Hearings over the past year in Mattoon and Tuscola and the two Texas FutureGen finalist site communities helped compile information for the Environmental Impact Statement. The final EIS will be forwarded to FutureGen Alliance, a consortium of utilities and coal-related companies, for helping make its final decision on the best site.

There are fears that the decision might be pushed back into 2008, but last month a FutureGen spokesman said all parties involved are committed to reaching a decision before the end of this year.
