EIU art faculty pieces on display at Tarble Arts Center
By the JG/T-C editorial@jg-tc.com
Eastern Illinois University’s 2007 Art Faculty Exhibition remains on view through Jan. 6 in the Tarble Arts Center’s main galleries. Exhibited are recent works by current and emeritus EIU art faculty.
Participating from the faculty are Katherine Bartel, Jeff Boshart, Suzan Braun, Jenny Chi, Ann Coddington Rast, David Griffin, Robert Horvath, Chris Kahler, Dwain Naragon and Chuck Nivens, plus adjunct instructor Dorothy Bennett and emeritus faculty member Bill Heyduck. Included are paintings, drawings, sculpture, metals, textiles, ceramics, graphic design and digital art.
Ceramics dominate the exhibition in terms of the number of works on show. From Bennett are mask-like forms inspired by Mexican art. Naragon is presenting small, wheel-thrown vessels with carved surface decoration. And Heyduck’s ceramics bridge sculpture and vessels, with his thrown and built pieces based on birds, fish and cat forms.
Textiles are being presented with an embroidered form by Bartel, loom weavings from Braun, and a knotted netting and twined linen piece by Coddington Rast. Coddington Rast also is showing a drawing of an inverted fir tree.
Chi is represented by two red chalk figure studies, and oil paintings based on classical subjects and techniques. More contemporary, abstract forms are found in the oil and watercolor paintings by Horvath, and acrylic paintings by Kahler — both artists are inspired by organic forms. Boshart’s angular abstract steel and stone sculpture draw inspiration from architectural constructions. Griffin’s wood and metal sculptural piece is based on a vessel form.
Completing the exhibition are a number of graphic design pieces from Nivens as art director, with his daughter Haley Nivens-Ahlers serving as designer.
This exhibition is co-sponsored with the EIU art department.
