Dragway heads to final weekend

CHARLESTON — The final points race of the season takes place at the Coles County Dragway Sunday as the season comes to an end.

An open session for Street Legal cars is also scheduled Saturday, along with a test and tune from 5-9 p.m.

The closest battles are in Super Pro, where Decatur’s Gary Morse holds a two-point lead over Steve Maxwell (Taylorville), and Zip Donnan (Marshall) and Doug Patrick (Mattoon) are still within striking range; and in the Pro division, paced by Tuscola’s Andy Romine. Romine leads Mattoon’s Terry Willard by two points.

In the street class, Rob Fisher (Humboldt) leads Urbana’s Bob Burnett by eight points, with a trio of local drivers – Mattoon’s Nick Harlin, Ashmore’s Harold Wright and Charleston’s Brad Talbert – still in the top five.

Metcalf’s Holden English previously wrapped up his second straight Junior Dragster title and Charleston’s Kassie Edwards the Powder Puff crown. Chad Beery edged Charleston’s Chad Isley in the Motorcycle class.

Other champions were Shelbyville’s Craig Minor (Quick 8), Jeff Jones (Hoch Street Radial) and Kyle Wright (High School).
