Toledo woman's fall decorating ideas win her high honors in Country Woman magazine

TOLEDO — Autumn is here, and Cheryl Flood already has decked out her front yard with scarecrows, mums and gourds for her favorite season.

But, more importantly, her “fall wonderland” was recently recognized, pictured and described in Country Woman magazine after she entered a decorating contest last year.

Flood, 49, of Toledo received second place in the national search for the best traditional category for fall. She received $300 cash prize from the magazine.

Country Woman magazine Managing Editor Lori Lau Grzybowski said the judges looked for creative decorating ideas that reflected good basic design principles, ideas that would inspire other readers.

“Cheryl’s décor, with perky scarecrows, cornstalks, gourds and mums, and her rustic fence and backyard cabin, are sure to do just that,” Grzybowski said.

Flood said she has many scarecrows — an estimated 200 — to decorate with, as she has a fall birthday and often receives the fall ornaments as gifts.

“My husband, Dan, helps me out a lot with the decorating and doesn’t complain a bit. He deserves a lot of credit,” Flood said.

Grzybowski said the contest drew more than 300 entries from the United States and Canada in two categories —traditional and Halloween.

The winners were announced in the October-November 2007 issue.

Flood said a friend who received the magazine in the mail called to tell her that she was a second-place winner.

“I didn’t know I was a winner until my friend called,” Flood said.

She said it was the first time she’d entered the contest. Her husband, Dan, is an area farmer.

A reader of Country Woman magazine for about 15 years, Flood said she read about the contest in December 2006 and submitted her entry.

“I’ve always been into decorating and when I saw this contest, I thought it was right up my alley,” Flood said.
