Letter: God gave us mind on who we will follow

On Susan Humphrey’s letter to the editor on Aug. 10th she mentioned that she had read Buddha, Krishna, Lao Tzu, Black Elk and Mohammed and that she was a person of integrity who does not believe that our country is a Christian nation.

I believe that the United States of America is a Christian nation. Our forefathers came here originally searching for religious freedom, a place where they could worship God according to His word the Bible.

George Washington may not have gone to church, but he did make the statement, “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.” Taken from Halley’s Bible handbook.

In the Bible Mark 12:30-31 we read: “and thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

And the second is like it, namely this, thou shalt love they neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.”

I said all that to say this — I can and do love my neighbor — even th writers she spoke of — but I do not have to agree with them.

God gave us a mind to decide who we will follow.

I have chosen to follow Jesus and His word, the Bible.

" More self-satisfied, self-righteous religious ignorance. Thank you, madam, for nothing. "

" The problem, Doh, is that the ape has been stalling and hiding behind Petraeus for months, telling us, "Wait and listen to Gen. Petraeus." But we won't be listening to Petraeus' assessment. We will be listening to Petraeus mouth the words written by the ape's political hacks. "

" while the large percentage of the US is comprised on "christians", our government was designed to separate church and state. religion or religious beliefs should have no bearing or anything to do with governance or politics. that being said, anyone running for office will be subject to public scrutiny of their religious beliefs, and unjustly so. look at the crap JFK, and currently Mitt Romney go through....just because they aren't like the majority of the population. just because Romney is a practicing Mormon, doesn't make him any lesser of a candidate (darn hard for me to say that about a republican) but because he's different he'll have a tough time getting the nomination. he's a "clean" candidate with moral values, but people will cater to the Freds and Rudys that have multiple marriages and questionable character.....i guess my point is religion means nothing, and everything. the founding fathers didn't mean it to make a difference.
