Driver escapes injury in alcohol-related crash that kills passenger

CLARKSBURG — A single-vehicle accident early Sunday in rural Shelby County left one passenger dead and another with injuries, while the driver faces alcohol-related charges, but was unhurt, according to the Illinois State Police.

Shelbyville resident Jacob M. Edwards, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:15 a.m. Sunday by Shelby County Coroner Brian Green.

“He was the passenger in a vehicle with two other people (and) suffered multiple traumatic injuries,” Green said.

The ISP in Pesotum reported Edwards was the only person not fully ejected from the GMC Sonoma as it flipped after colliding with a tree alongside Shelby County Road 2125E.

But like the other two people in the vehicle, Edwards was not wearing a seat belt, said the ISP on a media release line. Edwards “was partially ejected and was struck by the truck as it overturned,” said state police.

About 3 a.m. just south of County Road. 350N, 22-year-old Zachary Edwards of Shelbyville was driving the Sonoma northbound on 2125E when he lost control and the truck veered to the left, said the ISP.

The driver “over-corrected,” sending the vehicle off the right side of the roadway and into a tree, said state police.

The truck then overturned, completely ejecting Zachary Edwards and another passenger, 26-year-old Haley Donald of Findlay, according to the ISP.

State police said Donald was injured and transported by Stewardson Ambulance to St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Police said Zachary Edwards was not hurt. He was cited for alleged aggravated driving under the influence; DUI-alcohol; another DUI offense; failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident; and failure to wear a seat belt.

Green said a coroner’s inquest for Jacob Edwards will be convened at a later date.
