ARCOLA — Following his father Jeff Fishel, Arcola’s Daniel Fishel is to play football at Millikin University in Decatur.
“We are very pleased that Daniel has decided to attend Millikin,” said Big Blue coach Doug Niebuhr. “He has excelled in the classroom as well as on the football field. He is a fine athlete who we look forward to working with.”
Fishel, a 5-10, 165 pounder lettered all four years for the Purple Riders, coached by Jarod Kiger. Fishel was the team captain and Most Valuable Player last fall as Arcola returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2002, finishing 7-3, the most wins since the 1999 season. Fishel was 41-of-88 for 652 yards and six touchdowns for Arcola and rushed for 379 yards and three touchdowns. As a junior Fishel earned the team’s Sportsmanship Award and caught nine passes for 301 yards with three touchdowns. His 33.4 yard average per reception, ranks him 12th all-time.
Fishel, who plans to major in exploratory studies, joins three area players in Charleston’s Brandon Davis, a junior; Russell Hays, a sophomore from Arthur and incoming freshman Kody Smith, an Illinois Football Coaches Association Class 1A All-State player, who rushed for 1,126 yards on 122 carries for the 9-3 Knights.
Fishel has played at quarterback, running back, wide receiver offensively and defensive back.
His father Jeff, a former Arcola standout, was the 1983 Big Blue MVP and a first team all-conference running back.
Millikin is a Division III school and competes in the Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Millikin has an enrollment of 2,400. The Big Blue went 3-7 last year, but Millikin has won 59 of its last 83 regular season games and two CCIW title in the last eight seasons. Niebuhr is to enter his 12th year and has a 66-42 record at Millikin after coaching at Wittenberg University in Ohio. Members of the CCIW include Wheaton, North Park, North Central, Illinois Wesleyan, Augustana, Elmhurst and Carthage. The season is to open Sept. 1 as the Big Blue are to play host to Illinois College at 1 p.m.
