'The Sound of Music' opens at Little Theatre on the Square next week

SULLIVAN — The fourth production of The Little Theatre On The Square’s 50th Anniversary season — “The Sound Of Music” — opens July 25 and plays through Aug. 5.

“The Sound Of Music” is the eleventh and last musical written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The show follows the adventures of the famous Trapp Family Singers who delighted concert hall audiences in America and Europe through the late 1930s.

“The Sound Of Music” begins with the portrayal of a novice in a convent who distresses the nuns by wandering off out on the mountainsides to sing to herself. A call to the abbey from the aristocratic Captain von Trapp sends Maria out into the world to become a nanny for the von Trapp children. Very soon, Maria wins the hearts of the children and eventually, the heart of Captain von Trapp himself. She teaches them all the joy of singing and helps them escape the threat of the Nazis.

Embellishing this warm, light-hearted tale are some of the most memorable tunes in the Rodgers and Hammerstein library. They include “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “The Lonely Goatherd,” “So Long Farewell,” “Edelweiss” and the title song “The Sound Of Music.”

Millikin University graduate Ella Mouria Seet stars in the role of Maria and Michael Haws plays Captain von Trapp.

The additional cast is made up of Kris Skjellerup (Mother Abbess) as the Mother Superior of the convent, Patrick McCarthy (Max Detweiler) as von Trapp’s genial but cautious friend, Tori Hicks (Elsa Schraeder) as a fashionable lady visitor to the castle, Kara Guy (Liesl) the oldest von Trapp daughter and Patrick Shaw (Rolf) her love interest.

Barbie Diewald plays Frau Schmidt the maid, Chase Renouf plays Franz the Butler, Brenna Bradbury plays Sr. Margaretta, Abbey Elliott plays Sr. Sophia and John Ramsey, Jr. plays Herr Zeller.

The von Trapp children are split into two alternating casts. The Ti-Do cast is made up of Michael Rosenbaum of Arthur as Friedrich, Shelby Phipps of Mattoon as Louisa, Emma Taylor or Macon as Brigitta, Jordan Villanueva of Moweaqua as Kurt, Ella Lubienski of Urbana as Marta and Kaitlin Villanueva of Moweaqua as Gretl.

The Do-Re cast is made up of Brock Taylor of Mattoon as Friedrich, Evin Lehman of Sullivan as Louisa, Melinda Holmes of Mattoon as Brigitta, Christian Clark Of Decatur as Kurt, MacKenzie Gossard of Mattoon as Marta and Sarah Birchenough of Tuscola as Gretl.

“The Sound Of Music” is directed by Jason Loete and choreographed by Marie Jagger-Taylor. Jason Yarcho of Lincoln serves as music director for the show. Noel Rennerfeldt is the scenic designer, Emilee McVey is the costume designer, Joe Spratt is the lighting designer and David J. Scobbie is the sound designer.

Tickets for “The Sound Of Music” are available by calling The Little Theatre On The Square box office at 217-728-7375 or toll-free at 1-888-261-9675. For more information about this show or other shows at The Little Theatre On The Square, visit www.thelittletheatre.org.
