Letter: Lincoln Presidential Museum a treasure

On Independence Day, my family and I visited the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield. Wow! What a magnificent tribute to our 16th president. This outstanding presentation, for ages 7 to 97, is much more than a museum. It has five venues with fascinating displays, exciting video productions, interesting artifacts and more, all making Lincoln’s 56 short years come to life.

One presentation, given by the artist commissioned to create a Lincoln portrait, aptly uses nine screens to look at a young Abe, and the president’s most lasting legacy, passing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Another auditorium holds the “Ghosts of the Library” presentation which talks about the importance of “old things,” their relevance to today, finding new pieces of history, and the Lincoln Library. A breathtaking walking tour of the president’s White House years brought tears to many viewers eyes, including ours.

The current visiting exhibit, “First Lady of Controversy, Mary Todd Lincoln,” is quite enlightening regarding the misunderstood first lady. It remains through October.

How lucky we are to have this fascinating portrayal of American history in our own backyard. Please urge your readers to visit, The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library, a central Illinois treasure.

" Anyone who hasn't visited the Lincoln Presidential Museuem should make plans to do so as soon as possible. We've been twice and I look forward to going many times more. A great treasure that was a long time coming. Something Illinois can be extremely proud of. The two theaters (particularly 'Ghosts of the Library') are alone worth the price of admission not to mention everything else to be seen. My only suggestion would be to not take very young children. It just wouldn't mean that much to them. BUT, as soon as they are old enough, (8 or 9 maybe?), by all means make sure they see this. "
