McClure signing leaves one more opening for Lakers

MATTOON — William McClure, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward from Pike High School in Indianapolis, has signed with Lake Land’s men’s basketball team.

A good rebounder who should offer a physical presence in the post, the left-hander is a raw athlete in need of offensive seasoning. He graduated from a school that has become one of the premier Class 4A programs in Indiana. The Red Devils won state titles in 1998, 2001 and 2003.

“In the scheme of things his upside is tremendous,” Lake Land coach Cedric Brown said.

The Lakers still have one scholarship left for the 2007-08 class.

McClure is the third player from the city to be successfully recruited by Brown. Huzie Hambrite (Northwest High School) and Steve Hedrick (Lawrence Central) signed earlier this year.

Brown has solid ties in the area. He was an assistant at Chicago State with Kevin Jones, an Indianapolis native, and once worked there as an assistant manager for Bally Total Fitness. Plus, volunteer assistant Dave Earp has scoured the city for talent in recent years.

“We’ll always be able to get into Indianapolis and recruit some of the best talent there,” Brown said. “We got three quality kids and I think that’s so important to us going into a new regime. We’re getting kids that are going to go to class, going to do well in the community going to compete and do well in the GRAC.”

- Rick Ball of BALLSTARS is directing an NCAA certified camp for unsigned community college sophomores and other potential recruits at Lewis University in Romeoville July 7-8.

Several Lake Land players are expected to attend.

JUCO freshmen and unsigned high school players from the 2007 and 2008 classes are also allowed to attend the camp.

- The first half of Lake Land’s girls’ basketball high school league finished this week. The championship takes place on July 24 at 7 p.m.

Mattoon, Neoga and Sullivan have competed with an AAU team consisting of Lake Land players. The three schools could be joined by Villa Grove, Effingham St. Anthony and perhaps one more school when play resumes on Tuesday.

Among the players who’ve impressed in the early going are Neoga’s Kayci Will and Megan Krampe, Sullivan’s Lauren Taylor and Mattoon’s Jenna Spitz and Kayla Patrem.
