Charleston resident joins the Peace Corps in Cameroon

CHARLESTON — A local woman has been accepted into the Peace Corps and is serving in Cameroon.

Rachel Anne Jones, 22, the daughter of E. Michael and Cynthia Jones of Charleston, departed for Cameroon on June 8. She will serve as an educational Peace Corps Volunteer. Jones’ work will involve teaching secondary school English classes in a local Ghanaian school.

A graduate of Routt Catholic High School in Jacksonville, Jones attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., and earned a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and African studies, graduating this spring.

Jones previously worked with a program in the St. Paul Public Schools that enables high school students in the academic middle to get ready for entry into four-year colleges and universities.

During the first three months of her service, Jones will live with a host family in Cameroon to become fully immersed in the country’s language and culture. After acquiring the language and cultural skills necessary to assist her community, Jones will serve for two years in Cameroon, living in a manner similar to people in her host country.

Jones joins 319 other Illinois residents currently serving in the Peace Corps. More than 7,126 Illinois residents have served in the Peace Corps since 1961.

Since the program’s establishment in 1962, more than 2,800 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in Cameroon. Currently, 132 Peace Corps Volunteers serve in the country to improve Cameroon’s quality of education, promote agro-forestry and permanent farming systems, and encourage knowledge of the benefits of water sanitation and HIV/AIDS prevention. Cameroon will receive 44 new Peace Corps trainees in health and Agro-forestry programs next month.

The Peace Corps is celebrating a 46-year legacy of service at home and abroad. Peace Corps Volunteers must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age. Peace Corps service is a 27-month commitment.
