Bingo games kick off Red, White & Blue Days Sunday

CHARLESTON — The Red, White & Blue Days festival is scheduled to kick off Sunday afternoon with annual bingo games at Morton Park.

In addition, the Fourth of July Committee has started selling festival T-shirts and new tank tops. Both the bingo games and the shirt sales raise funds for the festival.

Bingo for cash and other prizes will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday in the north pavilion at the park, located along Lincoln Avenue. Bingo caller Harold Hackett said businesses have donated several prizes, including gift certificates and a DVD player. Participants can pay 25 cents per card, per game, and play as many cards and games as they want.

“The weather man has promised good weather. We are looking forward to having a lot of fun on Sunday,” Hackett said. He added the Fourth of July Committee will sell popcorn, ice cream bars and soda at the pavilion.

The bingo games are the first event every year of Charleston’s Fourth of July festival, but Hackett said the games routinely attract participants from neighboring communities.

“Some people from Greenup and Mattoon have already been asking me about it,” Hackett said.

Hackett estimated approximately 300 people played bingo last year. He plans on having at least a dozen volunteers Sunday afternoon to collect money and hand out cards so the games will go smoothly.

Proceeds from the bingo games help cover the costs of entertainment and other expenses for Red, White & Blue Days. Another important fund-raiser is the sale of T-shirts.

Fourth of July Committee member Dave Hackett said the latest T-shirts, as well as new women’s tank tops, bear the “Connecting Heroes to Home” theme of this year’s festival. The white shirts, designed by Julia Morrisey of Charleston, bear an image of an American flag and a tree with a yellow ribbon in front of a house.

The shirts can be purchased for $10 each in children’s, medium, large, extra large, and double extra large sizes. They are available at Save-A-Lot, 1400 Lincoln Ave., and will be sold at Morton Park during festival events.

Country star Sammy Kershaw will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday following 6 p.m. opening act the Well Hungarians. Country star Tommy Cash will perform a tribute to his brother Johnny Cash at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday following a parade at 1 p.m. Entry to all the concerts is free.
