Lake Land student receives Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship Award

MATTOON — For one Lake Land College student, years of contributing to his community and beyond have paid off.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation recently announced that Scott Keller of Humboldt is a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship recipient, which can total up to $90,000.

Keller, who plans to transfer to Washington University in St. Louis and study to become a doctor, is one of 51 community college students in the United States to receive the award.

“The one thing that stands out about this student is his desire to help others. He has taken mission trips to New Orleans and Mexico to help repair homes,” said Pam Crisman, vice president for development at Lake Land.

At Lake Land he is a member of the Student Government Association, Chemistry Club and Habitat for Humanity. He also tutors other students in math and chemistry in his spare time. Keller has also served in numerous leadership positions through his 4-H club.

Along with his abundant community service activities, Keller received the scholarship because of his academic ability and achievement, unmet financial need, will to succeed, leadership and public service, critical-thinking ability and appreciation for the arts and humanities.

Throughout the nation, 723 nominees from approximately 438 community colleges applied for the scholarship.

“This is indeed an honor for Scott, for his family, particularly, his parents, for his faculty and for his educators. This is also an honor for Lake Land College,” Crisman said.

Keller is the third Lake Land student in three years to win the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship. Kristina Weaver, Mattoon, was given the scholarship last year and two years ago it went to Stephen Anderson, Stewardson.

This year’s Cooke Scholars come from two-year colleges in 24 states.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is a private, independent foundation established in 2000 by the estate of Jack Kent Cooke to help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education. It focuses in particular on students with financial need. The foundation’s programs include scholarships to undergraduate, graduate and high-school students and grants to organizations that serve high-achieving students with financial need.
