Thomas, Rucker among nation's best

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. – Eastern Illinois football seniors Donald Thomas and Micah Rucker have both been listed among the preseason top 5 players at their position by the Sports Network.

The Ohio Valley had a total of eight players recognized among the nation’s best at their positions in the rankings for the Football Championship Subdivision, previously known as NCAA Division I-AA.

Thomas was named the top linebacker in the FCS ranks as he returns from a junior season in which he was the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Panthers with 127 tackles.

Rucker (Bonita Springs, FL – Estero) quickly became one of the most prolific offensive weapons in the OVC last season as a junior wide receiver scoring 13 touchdowns. This year he is rated as the third best receiver in the FCS ranks, trailing only Alex Watson of Northern Arizona and Jerome Simpson of Coastal Carolina. Rucker was a first team All-OVC performer with 49 catches for 966 yards.

Other OVC players listed among the top returning players at their position are Tennessee State’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (rated No. 1 at cornerback); Tennessee Martin’s Donald Chapman (No. 2 running back), Billy Krause (No. 4 center) and Jesse Burton (No. 3 kick returner); and Tennessee Tech’s Larry Shipp (No. 10 wide receiver) and Geoffrey Woods (No. 4 defensive tackle).
