Annual garden walk to be held Saturday

The Mattoon First United Methodist Women will present its 2007 garden walk, “Gather at the Gardens,” from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 the day of the tour. The ticket includes a self-guided tour, entertainment, refreshments and Master Gardener tips.

Tickets are available at each garden site, deBuhr’s Feed and Seed, The Picket Fence, Mattoon Welcome Center at Peterson Park and at the First United Methodist Church, 16th Street and Charleston Avenue (enter through the north side entrance).

Following is a description of the garden locations.

Lynn Kendrick -- 2708 Oak Ave.

This lovely garden includes bright birding stations for food and water. Annie Potts — a terra-cotta pot lady, container gardening, window boxes, various ornaments and figures and three water features; a garden pool with pump, an Olla Bubbler and Terra Cotta Solar. Plants include florals, shade plants and herbs.

Joyce and Dean Marshall -- 920 N. 30th St.

This is the fourth year for the garden. Originally, a kidney-shaped in-ground swimming pool that they no longer used led to the decision to have a flower garden. After many hours and days of hard work and planning, the garden is now a peaceful, quiet place to relax, watch the birds and listen to the chimes. The Marshalls like to travel and usually bring back items for the garden. After a recent trip to Arizona they brought back a plant named “red yucca.” As you enter the garden by the south side of the house, there are hostas, Asian lilies and daylilies. As there is no shade, all of the plants have to be “sun lovers.” There are several different varieties of perennials to enjoy as you follow the red brick walk.

Gail and Gary Hurst -- 3104 Prairie Ave.

A brick walkway leads visitors to a country primitive potting shed. The shed invites you in to try your hand at transplanting flowers and herbs. As you stand on the shed’s porch, you can see a waterfall that cascades into a small pond. The pond includes water lilies and, of course, goldfish. The garden is accented by raised beds. The walkway is lined with herbs — a little pinch reveals mint, oregano, basil and thyme. The center pool and deck welcome you to relax in several sitting areas. Bursts of color range from blue lobelia to purple sage, red verbena to pink geranium and yellow million bells to white diamond frost.

Lytle Park Children’s -- Garden & wading fountain

While on the west side of Mattoon, visit the children’s garden in Lytle Park, and don’t forget the new wading fountain on the east side of the park off 32nd Street. The park has acquired new property from the demolition of Bennett School, just recently adding a memorial dedicated to the school.

Karen and Allen Newman -- 3612 Western Ave.

This location, long known to native Mattoon as “The Chalet,” is a deep, tree-lined lot with large flower beds in front featuring perennials and colorful seasonal plants and grasses. Enjoy the shade-loving gardens in the back and side with a cottage and hidden patio to stop the rest.

Edith Winberg and daughter Penny Prahl -- 1006 Front St., Gays

This beautiful garden is the pride and joy of Edith, but her daughter, Penny, has added new ideas in the two years she has lived here. It features a water pond with koi, goldfish and a waterfall. Wander through the perennials, annuals, shrubs, roses, and the trellis with vining flowers to enjoy another budding water feature, potting shed, container gardening, hanging baskets and a shade garden. Relax with refreshments in this beautiful setting and enjoy the music of Wilhe Pickit.

Two-story Outhouse in Gays

While in Gays don’t forget to check out this famous (or infamous) outbuilding! It is located just two lots west of Winberg’s home.
