Post 24 completes sweep

CHAMPAIGN – Neil Wright’s hit to left-center scored Derek Leemon from first base, the winning run in Champaign’s 4-3 11-inning win against Mattoon in Wednesday’s late American Legion baseball game.
Leemon led off the bottom of the 11th with a single. Ryan Willison, the sixth pitcher used by Post 88, struck out the next batter before Wright lined a single that was bobbled in the outfield. Leemon, who got a solid jump from first, scored just ahead of the throw to the plate.
The win completed a sweep for Post 24. Mattoon, which returns home for a doubleheader vs. Effingham today, fell to 7-9.
Mattoon used a three-run sixth to tie the game. Ryan Bradley doubled with one out, moved to third on Adam Harrington’s single and scored on a wild pitch. Two more hits followed.
Harrington, who advanced to second on the same play, was driven in by Lydon Burson and Alek Mann singled in Burson with the final run.
In his third start, Blake Fairchild lasted four innings, giving up six hits and two runs.
“He’s getting better,” Mattoon coach Steve Metzger said. “He went to a little too many full counts on guys. But there was a little pressure on Blake. He wanted to do good at Champaign.
“I didn’t want anybody to go too long. Matt Miller was in the 40-pitch count for two innings so he probably won’t throw this weekend.”
Mann could get the call in one of the games vs. Effingham. Josh Wilson and Bradley are scheduled to start when Terre Haute visits on Saturday.
Mann and Lyle Seaman had three hits apiece, while Bradley doubled twice and Harrington and Burson each had two more hits.
