Youth baseball camp to be held by Lake Land
By the JG/T-C sports@jg-tc.com
MATTOON – Lake Land baseball coach Jim Jarrett is conducting a summer camp at the college for boys and girls from ages 11-13.
The camp runs 2 to 5 p.m. daily June 26-28 and covers fielding, hitting and game day skills. The cost is $60. Registration deadline is June 22.
For more information, or a camp form, contact Jarrett at 234-5336.
- Seven Lake Land baseball graduates have landed at other schools.
Along with Michael Kellar and Matt Dasenbrock, who months ago signed with Niagara and Harris-Stowe State, respectively, Josh Blaum is going to Northern Kentucky, Quin Murray to Millikin, Pete Hornstein to Kentucky Wesleyan and Drew Wurzelbacher to Ouachita Baptist.
Ryan Nevill joined Dayton’s roster as a preferred walk-on.
Wurzelbacher and Hornstein were also recently named Academic All-Americans.
- Kevin Bird, who sat out as a medical redshirt, is one of several area players now competing in the Eastern Illinois League. Bird, Will Clark, a Shelbyville grad, and Brad McCall play for the Royal Giants.
Other E.I. League players with Lake Land ties include Austin Brough of the Central Angels, Kyle Buhrmaster of the Buckley Dutch Masters, Blaum with the Clinton Zugs and Josh Dallas with Gifford-Flatville.
Austin Peay sophomore and Charleston graduate J.B. Gilbert has joined former prep teammate Scott Frankie at Chambana, a team that also includes Neoga’s Chet Burns and Drew Mars.
Three more — Brock Niebuhr (Buckley), Andy Lyons (Clinton) and Andy Rousseau (Clinton) – played at Eastern Illinois.
Shelbyville’s Trent Duckett and Arthur’s Marcus Wilson are on Clinton’s roster.
- A couple of Lake Land softball players could wind up getting rides at four-year schools next year. Morgan Finn, an all-Great Rivers selection who won 20 games for the Lady Lakers, may transfer to an NCAA Division I, with St. Louis University a possible destination.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods, where former Lake Land pitcher Ashley Loomis is a team member, has been mentioned as a possibility for shortstop Sasha Stanton, an Indiana prep product.
- Summer Challenge, a high school volleyball tournament, gets under way at Lake Land today and ends on Saturday.
Teams registered to attend include Charleston’s varsity and junior varsity, Dieterich, Stewardson-Strasburg, Tri-County, Neoga, Newton and Argenta-Oreana
