Letter: Strange is right about loud motorcycles

While reading the letters to the editor the other day, I saw a letter from a lady in answer to Mr. Strange’s letter about “the evil motorcycle“. All was well until I saw the phrase “motorcycles has mufflers.” At this point it was a good thing I did not have a mouthful of coffee or I probably would have spewed like Old Faithful and choked to death from laughing.

After composing myself, I thought back into the days of my youth (not quite as far back as Harry’s), and vaguely remembered there once was a state law that essentially said, “No person shall modify the exhaust system of any vehicle so as to cause it to be louder.” I seem to recall that most towns also had similar laws. I have also heard tales of police officers checking to make sure mufflers were in proper working order.

However, in recent years, I had thought that these laws had been quietly repealed or were like some of the blue laws that time had passed by(not worthy of enforcement).

With some motorcycle organizations touting the removal of mufflers(using the slogan: “Loud Pipes Save Lives”), motorcycle TV shows not even attempting to use mufflers and hearing a number of cyclists saying they were going to change their pipes (read, put on a straight pipe), it is no wonder I was so amazed to read the phrase in the lady’s letter.

It seems that 90% of motorcycles that go by the places I frequent have no muffler at all and the riders all seem to be making a concerted effort to be sure every one knows it. Especially in the late night hours. A person would think these riders would show a little restraint in town, but nooo, “not me, I like to wake people up.”

So, until I hear different, I am going to agree with Mr. Strange on that part of his letter.

For the record, yes, I ride. It’s a scooter that is big, fast, comfortable and has the muffler that came from the factory.

" Oh yes, I too can remember when police officers used to check and issue tickets for illegal pipes. All of those "policemen" must of retired. All we have in Mattoon now are "uniformed loafers" that only leave the station to hang out at the convenience stores. Not all riders are loud but a good percentage of them are and give the rest of us a bad name. "

Idiots wrote on May 31, 2007 1:54 PM:

" What the loud motorcycle gang types don't seem to understand is that they look and sound like idiots when they ride around town with loud mufflers. They think they are so cool! In reality, they are idiots. I'm all for the law enforcing the muffler laws - think of the money the police department could rake in! Harley riders are losers. "

" Really "Strange" is what I'd call a couple of these comments, & I'm going to throw in one myself. ~ Stop living in a closed mind & a closed world. Get out & get your hands dirty for once - You might find out you actually like it. Go for a cruise on a bike sometime - Let your hair down & enjoy life. Life is short enough the way it is. "

" First; I agree with Good Job Lowell: Second TO Idiots; I too don't like loud bikes but not all loud bikes are of a gang or are they Idiots, yes some of them sound terrible but FYI not all Harleys are loud or are they necessarily losers. There are also other brands of bikes that are loud. Third Rotty; It would help if some bikers didn't do some things they do to give all bikers a bad rap. "

Why? wrote on May 31, 2007 7:56 PM:

" Why don't the local police enforce the muffler laws on motorcycles? I have seen police cars sit next to motorcycles who were revving up their machines and the cops seem totally oblivious. "

" I have a motorcycle and it is a Harley Davidson. I have loud pipes on it and I enjoy the sound that they make. I know that everyone does not like the sound and hold it down in town. I have loud pipes so people like "idiot" can hear me comming and won't pull out in front of me and kill me at a stop sign. I resent being called an idiot and you saying all Harley riders are gang members.....I am not a member of any gang, BUT I do have several friends that are and they would be the first one to stop and help your wife or daughter with a flat tire, its guys like you that would drive on by with out offering any help.I also have a lot of friends that are cops and they ride Harley Davidsons also. and if I was acting a fool on my motorcycle they would stop me. Says a lot about a person who is afraid to put his name in print with a lousey comments like you made. "

Why you ask? wrote on Jun 1, 2007 7:06 AM:

" Because cops don't want to get out of their cars. They don't want to issue citations. It ruins their image and makes them look like the bad guys. They want everyone to like them and if they try to do their job as they should, people will hate them and call the "pigs". So just sit and watch the violators and criminals and get paid to do nothing. "

My opinion wrote on Jun 1, 2007 10:56 AM:

" I know my opinion doesn't count too much, but I would MUCH rather hear a loud motorcycle than someone's loud pumping music. If the police start giving tickets for loud motorcycles, I think they need to ticket drivers with loud music too. "

Just a Soldier wrote on Jun 1, 2007 11:57 AM:

" I think they should start issuing citations for crying too loud about anything that doesn't fall in line with one's own personal preferences. Not a week goes by that I don't see dozens of people on here trying to get something outlawed based entirely on personal preference. "I don't like loud things so they should be banned" "I don't like smoking. It should be banned" "I don't like this coach. He/she should be fired". Good grief. "

Loud Pipes wrote on Jun 1, 2007 11:11 PM:

" Loud pipes are awful, and the people who insist on using them are rude and thoughtless. Just the other day, some jerk on a loud loud bike roared by the parking lot I was in with my 6 year old daughter. It hurt my ears...it felt like someone had jabbed a nail into my ear drum...and he also triggered a migraine. My six year old was holding her ears and crying because it hurt HER ears, too. That is selfish and careless, and loud noise has been proven time and time again to be damaging to your ears. If you want to ruin your own ears, that is your perogative...but you have no right to damage mine with your loud pipes. I'm more likely to see a bike that is not assaulting me with loud pipes. The reason for this is that I involuntarily close my eyes and turn away from the sound trying to protect myself. The noise laws, muffler laws, whatever...they need to be enforced. That's a public nuisance. "

" in my car i can't hear loud motorcycles coming towards me. so how do loud pipes save lives? i can certainly hear them when i am in my house. yes i tried a motorcycle and again i like them quiet. so i tried it and i don't like it loud. i don't understand why they need to be loud. the motorcycle still moves when it has a proper muffler on it.
