For Dau, a learning experience in 3,200s at state track meet
By MIKE MONAHAN, Staff Writer mmonahan@jg-tc.com
CHARLESTON -- For the first time since 1998 Charleston had a competitor in an individual running event as junior Claire Dau (Gena Nance participated in the 800 preliminaries Friday) participated in the 36th annual IHSA state track meet Saturday at Eastern Illinois Universities O’Brien Stadium. Dau was in the 3,200 run, the same event Carmen Owens ran in 1998 for the Lady Trojans.
The 3,200 does not have preliminaries and Dau was one of 18 competing in the first of two heats. Dau had advanced to the state meet by placing second in the Champaign Central sectional with a time of 12:23.61.
“It was nerve wracking,” said Dau. “It was a good experience, but I have a lot to learn from it.”
Dau, who was in 16th place at the halfway mark and remained that way at the end, finished in the same position she entered the state in, 38th overall. Dau ran a 12:30.97.
“She went out too fast and she knows that,” said Charleston girls’ track coach Barb Heitka. “She got caught up in the pace a little bit. I don’t know if it was the excitement or what.”
Dau, who had run an 11:57.2, which had tied for the Journal-Gazette/Times-Courier area best in that event entering the state meet said, “My goal was to run a p.r. There was really good competition. I was just hoping to be able to tack on to them (other runners) and stay with it, but I didn’t do so well with that strategy. Hopefully, I will be able to come back next year and do a heck of a lot better than what I did this year because I am not too quite happy with what happened.”
Dau is to compete in the Decatur Herald & Review Area Best meet Tuesday at Millikin University along with Nance and others.
“She has still got some goals to shoot for and she has the newness of competing at state,” said Heitka. “She is going to the area best and may she will end up with a p.r. We are looking to have a fun day.”
