Gibbel pulls off stunner in state badminton finals

CHARLESTON – Karishma Kollipara’s two-year run of state badminton dominance is over.

Mount Prospect’s Lindsay Gibbel, the No. 2 seed, defeated the Hinsdale Central junior, the top seed, 11-6, 11-7 Saturday in the IHSA state tournament finals at Eastern Illinois University. Gibbel, a senior, had lost to Kollipara in a close semifinal match a year ago.

Kollipara entered the match having never been beaten at the prep level and looking to become the first player in state history to win three consecutive titles.

Both finished with 44-1 records.

Gibbel became the first Mount Prospect player to win the singles championship. Lisa Young (1978) and Kate Geaman (2000) were previous runners-up.

Palatine Fremd also won the team title for the first time.
