Letter: Alcohol damages a person's health

Alcohol is illegal for young people for a good reason. Alcohol causes even more damage to teens’ health then to adults’ health. Young people continue to grow into their 20s. Alcohol can slow the bone growth that makes one tall. It gets in the way of growth you can’t see — the brain, reproductive system and liver mature throughout the teens.

Alcohol hurts drinkers’ bodies and warps their minds. Drunk people make bad choices, they fight over silly things, skip school, do risky stunts and worse. They make deadly choices like driving under the influence.

Short-term affects are: slow, poor thinking, blurry or double vision, nausea and vomiting, heavy sweating, poor reactions and coordination, low heart rate, slower growth rate in teens.

Long-term effects are: brain cell death, heart disease, cancer of the mouth or stomach, liver disease, weak bones, death. Alcohol is a toxin and the liver’s job is to clear toxins from the blood. Alcohol works the liver to death.

National Youth Temperance Education (YTE) week was observed April 22-28. It was first observed in Virginia in 1945 with a proclamation from the governor. Beginning in the early 1960s, a concerted effort was made by the WCTU to obtain a proclamation for the week from the President of the United States, A joint resolution led by President Lyndon Johnson to sign a proclamation designating April 23-29, 1967 Youth Temperance Education week.

There are over 20 stores in Mattoon which sell liquor. The Bible says it is wrong to give one’s neighbor drink and woe to those who do. Even grocery stores have liquor licenses. Alcohol is not a food, no matter how much they try to prove it. They should not be given a license to sell it. In March, there were seven stores who sold liquor to minors. The mayor said no one called to complain about selling to minors. Why? Does no one care? If you never start drinking, you never have to quit.
