NEOGA – In a doubleheader between two different teams Neoga earned a split Saturday, falling to Flora 11-8 in the first game, but nipping Cumberland 6-5 in the second game.
Neoga led in the first game 5-4, but the Wolves scored four runs in the fourth and went on to win by three, banging out 18 hits.
David Massengill had three runs batted in, while Wes Letizia had two in the loss.
In the second game between two area teams, Neoga scored three runs in the last of the seventh for a come-from-behind win. Jared Massengill walked and his brother, David smacked a two-run homer to tie the game. Letizia followed with a double and after an intentional walk and one out Austin Robinson singled up the middle, scoring Letizia with the game-winner.
Cumberland had taken the lead 4-0 in the second with the help of a three-run homer by Kye Butler. Austin Smith hit a solo home run also.
“We played another good game, but we have to learn to shut the door,” said Cumberland coach Jim Miller. “Experienced teams know how to finish. We’re taking care of the baseball better, pitching is improving, and hitting needs to be more consistent.
Neoga, 8-3, is to travel to Windsor for a 4: 30 p.m. game today, while Cumberland is to travel to Bridgeport to face Red Hill in a Little Illini Conference game.
