EIU Symphony Orchestra to present 'Musical Journey'

Charleston — “A Musical Journey Through Time” will be presented by the Eastern Symphony Orchestra at 4 p.m. Sunday in the McAfee Auditorium.
The concert will feature music from the Baroque period to the 20th Century. Joining the Orchestra will be the University Mixed Chorus and the Eastern Illinois Oratorio Society. The groups will be conducted by Richard Robert Rossi.
The afternoon concert will also feature special guest soprano Desiree Hassler of Champaign. Hassler will be featured during the performance of “Kyrie” from “Missa in Augustina No. 3 in D Minor” by Franz Joseph Haydn. Hassler is pursuing a Doctoral Degree in vocal performance and literature from the University of Illinois, where she received a Master’s Degree in 2003.
While at U of I, Hassler has been featured in the productions of “La Traviata,” “The Impresario” and “Roméo et
Juliette.” A California native, she has performed with the
Chicago Symphony Chorus. She is teaching voice at EIU during Marilyn Coles’ sabbatical leave.
Another special guest performance will be pianist Cole Harrison, who will perform “Concerto in A minor, Op 16” by Edvard Grieg. Harrison is the 2007 Concerto Winner and a sophomore piano performance major at Eastern. He was born and raised in Hannibal, Mo., where he began taking piano lessons at the age of 6. At Eastern, he accompanies the University Mixed Chorus and Oratorio Society.
The concert will feature performances of Bach’s “Air on G String,” Handel’s “Zadok the Priest,” Verdi’s “Dies Irae,” Bizet’s “Les Toreadors” from “Carmen Suite No. 1” and the Sabre Dance from “Three Dances from the Gayne Ballet” by Khachaturian and more.
Tickets for the “Musical Journey Through Time” concert can be purchased at the day of the concert at the door. Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 senior citizens and $5 for youth 17 and under. EIU faculty, staff and students admitted free with an EIU ID.
The Eastern Symphony Orchestra is sponsored in part by the Charleston Area Charitable Foundation and in part by a gift from Christine Gordon. The McAfee Auditorium is located on South Fourth Street at the corner of Grant Avenue. Convenient parking is located near the entrance of the building and accessible parking is also available.
