'Nothing But Nets' campaign to help fight malaria in Africa

CHARLESTON — The Wesley Foundation at Eastern Illinois University is participating in an organization that provides bed nets for people in Africa to prevent the spread of malaria.

Every $10 donation to Nothing But Nets pays for the purchase, distribution and education on the proper use of an insecticide-treated bed net.

Bed nets stop mosquitoes from biting during the night and spreading the disease, and the insecticide on the net kills the mosquitoes when they land on it, stopping them from flying on to their next victim.

The nets can also prevent malaria transmission by 50 percent. They are distributed through the Measles Initiative, which is a partnership of the United Nations Foundation, American Red Cross, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, UNICEF and local country governments and ministries of health.

During the week of April 9-13, the Wesley Foundation will have daily events in order to raise money for the organization. Following is the schedule of events:

Monday: 7 p.m., three-point basketball shootout; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., lollipops will be sold in Coleman Hall.

Tuesday: 10 a.m.-4 p.m., accepting donations on the library quad and south quad; 7 p.m., a presentation on malaria mosquitoes at Buzzard Auditorium by Gary Fritz, professor in the department of biological sciences at EIU.

Wednesday: 10 a.m.-4 p.m., donations accepted on the library quad and south quad; 5:30 p.m., pizza-eating contest on the south quad sponsored by Pizza Hut.

Thursday and Friday: 11 a.m.-2 p.m., selling hot dogs on the corner of Fourth Street and Lincoln Avenue.
